A night dedicated to the year's biggest music videos, the MTV Video Music Awards were held on September 11 in New York and featured the biggest names in music on the red carpet.
The night featured stunning performances from Katy Perry, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan and more. Taylor Swift even made an appearance and became the most decorated artist in VMAs history, taking home seven awards. For a night this big, the looks have to match!
Below, we are sharing three show-stopping styles sported by Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Doechii from the hair professionals who created their looks. Follow along, so your clients can be red carpet ready.
Chappell Roan's Medieval Waves and Braids
After opening for Olivia Rodrigo on the GUTS Tour earlier this year, Chappell Roan quickly rose to fame with songs like "HOT TO GO!" and "Good Luck, Babe!" becoming smash hits. Roan performed the former track on the VMAs stage and took home an award for Best New Artist.
On the red carpet, the singer sported a gothic medieval look. wearing a floor-length, deep V-neckline dress from Y/Project's Fall 2024 collection. The sheer, layered garment featured maroon and ghost-gray vertical stripes over a neutral half-slip ending mid-thigh. The look was accessorized with a large cross necklace, a sword and dagger-like nails.
To match an ensemble this dramatic, Celebrity hairstylist Dom Forletta (@domforletta) created a very natural, kind of medieval soft wave with intricate braids in the front and back of her hair, using products and tools from Bumble and bumble and Olivia Garden.
How-To:
- Start by prepping the hair with the Bb.Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer to hydrate and provide heat protection.
- Next, blow-dry hair using Olivia Garden’s Super HP Dryer and the Ceramic + Ion Speed XL Extra-Long Barrel Hair Brush.
- For the curls, use the Titanium + Ion Curling Iron to ensure the curls are well-defined.
- After curling, brush hair with a detangler brush to separate the ringlets and give some natural movement, then add in Bb.Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil to increase the shine in the hair.
- At the front, section off parts of the hair to braid and pin them back. Apply Bumble and bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Long Last Styling Cream on top to soften and help the braids stay in place.
- For the back braids, create a netted braid piece to attach to the hair. Bumble and Bumble’s Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Long Last Styling Cream and Bb.Spray de Mode Hairspray are crucial at reducing frizz and providing extra hold for the red carpet.
- To finish, apply the Bb.Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Long Last Styling Cream for a polished, long-lasting look.
Doechii's Intricate Braids
Katy Perry received the MTV Video Vanguard Award and the VMAs. To celebrate her win, Perry performed a nine-minute mash-up of her greatest hits, as well as "I'm His, He's Mine," off of her new album. The track features rapper Doechii, who joined Perry on stage for the performance.
Celebrity hairstylist Malcom Marquez (@malcom.marquez) created a stunning, intricated braided masterpiece for the rapper using got2b protective styling products to create the look.
How-To:
- Malcolm slicked Doe’s hair up using the got2b Blasting Freeze Spray, blow drying in between layers.
- Then, Malcolm added the got2b Glued Styling Gel as a top layer.
- Malcolm did her edges using the got2b 2-in-1 Brow & Edge Gel.
- To create the braids, he used the got2b Glued Smooth & Hold Mousse to add shine and hold in the sculpted braids and did final touches using the got2b Bonding Glue for extra hold.
Sabrina Carpenter's Old Hollywood Curls and Bangs
Sabrina Carpenter is making waves in pop music and in the hair industry, having recently been announced as Redken's first ever Global Ambassador. The singer performed a mashup of her three hit singles off of her new album "Short n' Sweet at the VMAs: "Please, Please, Please," "Taste" and "Espresso." She also took home her first VMA for "Song of the Year."
Celebrity hairstylist Evanie Frausto (@evaniefrausto) used Redken to achieve Carpenter's soft, old Hollywood curls and iconic bangs, a process that started six hours before the rest of her glam. Wearing a Bob Mackie dress previously worn by Madonna, the timeless look draws inspiration from both the '80s pop star and the enduring glamour of Marilyn Monroe.
How-To:
- For Sabrina Carpenter’s MTV VMAS 2024 hair look, we started 6 hours before glam by prepping her medium size bang in a roller and letting it sit until it was time to get her ready.
- Styling starts with the signature Evanie blowout, but with a special red-carpet twist. To give her the chic and elegant old Hollywood look, we cut her hair to lay on her shoulders. I then dampened Sabrina’s hair with water and layered in the Redken Volume Maximizer on top from roots to ends, brushing it through with a round brush. I then sectioned out the hair and clipped the parts in roller clips.
- After the blowout, I sectioned the top of her hair around the hair line and sectioned off underneath the crown. I ironed this section with a 1” curling iron and continued the set. Then with 3/4” of the head I used a 3/4” curling iron to give some tightness and bounce while embracing the shorter texture.
- Lastly, I took out all the pins and added the Redken Dry Texture Spray, brushing it all out to keep it soft and sexy. To top off the look, I added Redken Brushable Hairspray, and she was ready for the carpet.
