Getting Some Fishtail at Patricia Field

Think of Sex and the City, and you inevitably think of the amazing fashion the hit show brought into your living room time and time again. The woman responsible for the Manolos and newsprint Dior, Patricia Field, has decided to bring you a bit more of her glam touch via her own Patricia Field/House of Field swimwear, eyewear and beach towel lines that are 65% Carrie and 35% Samantha. (And, it should be noted, 0% Charlotte and Miranda).

To show off the goods (that are decidedly more yacht-appropriate than water-sports-minded) as well as celebrate the premiere of Sex and the City 2 (which, I am ashamed to admit, I haven’t seen yet), Field threw a “Swim-astional Disco Soiree” of epic-ly hip proportions on the rooftop of Manhattan’s 230 Fifth Avenue. Included in the festivities: a flashy runway show that featured off-beat hair styled by celeb stylist Rodney Cutler using Redken products. Of the frisky fishtail ’do, he tells me, “It’s fun and it works with the swimwear because of the clean lines. But with Patricia, you need to do something kind of kooky. That’s why we came up with the fishtail braid, and the way it’s folded into itself. It’s a bit Avatar.”

To get this disco-delish style, which Cutler explains has a clean silhouette, yet still appears very intricate, he first used Rootful 06 Root Lifting Spray for a bit of directional hold, and gathered the hair into a high, tight ponytail. He then wraps a section of the pony around its base to give it extra height and shape. “When I’m braiding, I put a little bit of Align 12 Protective Straightening Lotion on my hand to smooth the sections of the braid” for increased shine and definition, he explains. He then folds the braid into itself to create an oval, secures it with pins, and ensures it’ll hold its place throughout the rather misty (forecast: a little bit of rain on the parade!) fashionista event with Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray. —Karie L.
