When celebrities from Zendaya and Beyonce to social media personality Sofia Richie Grange and former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell embraced the sun-kissed, face-framing highlights also known as money pieces, the look became the hottest hair color trend of 2023. A year later, it shows no signs of slowing down. The name is a no-brainer since the lighter bands of color that brighten the face and provide contrast to all-over hair color look downright expensive, and the wow factor is guaranteed to turn heads.

About the Money Piece

The look ranges from modest highlights (ash blonde money pieces on honey-brown hair) to bright pops of color (lavender money pieces on dark hair) and can be achieved with a variety of techniques, including highlights, babylights, weaves and slices. Some popular options include caramel money pieces on brunettes and light blonde money pieces on a dirty blonde base.

Determining the placement of money pieces is key. “It’s important to be mindful of the natural flow or fall of the hair,” says Lisa Finucane, Director of Sales and Education for Satin Hair Color. “Trying to foil or balayage the money piece ‘against’ a natural part or natural fall of the hair will affect the results.” One rule of thumb is that when hair is one length and parted in the middle, money pieces look best when symmetrical on both sides, while hair that’s parted on the side benefits from a broad band of color on the heavier side.

Satin Hair Color has a full range of expertly formulated hair color solutions for creating the perfect money piece on any shade of hair. “Leave some warmth in hair whose base color is a level 4 to 6 to support the gloss shade and allow the color to pop,” says Finucane.
