Runway Report: Decades Dance at Malan Breton

At Malan Breton, Joico lead stylist Vivienne Mackinder is tasked with creating three looks that fall under the designer’s 1920s-meets-1970s vision. The first look: a loose, lazy wave tied back for a soft, whimsical effect. “It's the wave from the ’20s brought into a ’70s look and fused into today’s [style],” she explains. To get the ethereal look, depending on the models’ texture, Mackinder applies Joico Power Whip or Joico Power Spray Fast-Dry Finishing Spray and adds hair extensions as needed for length and volume. “There’s over $20,000 worth of hair extensions courtesy of The Hair Shop being used today!” she exclaims. She next applies Joico IronClad Thermal Protectant Spray and flat-irons the hair from the nape of the neck to the top of the head in no particular pattern to create a not-too-perfect look. “It's a dance, going left and right and left and right,” she explains of the flat-iron pattern. She then sets hair with Power Spray Fast-Dry Finishing Spray, letting any short pieces fall naturally around the face, and gathers side sections from the temple up, pulls them into a loose ponytail and then twists it and pulls it apart to create the sexy, soft look. She finishes with a spritz of Power Spray Fast-Dry Finishing Spray and Joico K-Pak Protect & Shine Serum to create shine and hold the design in place.

When crafting the second look, Mackinder took the show and collection into consideration. “[I thought about] the silhouette throughout the show and there's a shift, a distinctive scene change,” she says. “[One part] is more structured and fitted, so the whimsical, airy flirty [design] wouldn't have been right.” A structured bouffant with a twist braided into a sleek ponytail beautifully captures the collection’s spirit. To get the look, Mackinder first adds volume with Power Whip and blow-dries hair straight and away from the face. She then spritzes IronClad Thermal Protectant Spray and crafts a faux hawk with a large curling iron, keeping the ends straight and adding a hair pad at the crown for added volume. She next secures extensions into the nape of the neck and creates a ponytail, backcombs the hair around the front of the face and base, and then meshes the hair together from mid-shaft to ends. Once she smooths locks over the hair pad, she twists and pins the rest of the hair at the base of the bun. The hair under the hair pad, from nape to neck, is then lightly backcombed at the roots and braided. Once the braid is secured, Mackinder pulls it apart for extra texture. She seals the look with a spritz of Power Spray Fast-Dry Finishing Spray. “Malan said, ‘I don't want my girls to look like they fell asleep on the 6 train after swimming through the Hudson River,’” she laughs. The final ladies’ outcomes: “finished hair but still relaxed,” she adds.

For the third design, the men’s styles are surfer dude-esque—reminiscent of locks seen in The Blue Lagoon. “There's a sexiness about the men that I think is quite cool,” she says. “And it's great to see texture!” To create the undone and lived-in look, Mackinder applies Joico JoiGel to thick and wavy locks or Power Whip to fine, thin tresses, and then uses a curling iron and randomly curls varying-sized sections for a messy, abstract feel. Joico Hair Shake is then sprinkled through for a more textured and relaxed look while a spritz of Joico Flip Turn Volumizing Finishing Spray keeps the design in place. “The coolest thing about the men is we’re actually getting in there and doing their hair; we’re not just slicking it back!” says Joico celebrity stylist Paul Norton. “It’s fun to get into the hair, put an iron on the hair and make an old-fashioned iron set. You don’t generally get to do that with guys—they’re so minimal usually!”

Bite Beauty Lead Artist Janice Daoud crafts a glamorous yet innocent look for her makeup design. “It’s very girly, radiant and light,” she says. “They wanted to keep the girls natural but almost angelic.” To get the heavenly look, Daoud uses Bite Beauty High Pigment Pencil in rosy Velvet and coral Corvina on pouts; coats lids with Bite Beauty Opal Lip Gloss for a radiant feeling; and applies Bite Beauty Multistick in Cashew to the apples of the cheeks. “We want the eyes to look very pearlescent as well as the top of the cheeks. The rest is simply fresh,” she says.
