Tresses get twisted and flirt with forward-looking femininity at preen.
Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf? Not Thea Bregazzi and Justin Thornton, the designers behind Preen. The duo tap the fierce femme as their inspiration for their Spring/Summer 2012 line. To bring Woolf’s Victorian-esque fashion sensibilities up to speed and infuse them with more girl-y glamour, the duo transforms classic floral patterns into pixilated prints in colors that pop, while accenting streamlined silhouettes with plenty of ruffles and lace. To wit, lead stylist Paul Hanlon, who’s working with Aveda, creates clean, sleek twists in the hair to embody the youthful, modern lightness of the collection. “The hair is pure and neat—it almost has a ’40s feel,” Hanlon explains. “The hair is smooth and tight to the head to create a clean line that elegantly elongates the neck.”

To get the look, Hanlon first preps hair by spritzing throughout with Aveda Volumizing Tonic, and blow-drying with a round brush. He then parts hair to the left side and begins twisting the hair on the right side of the head from the top of the ear to the back of the head, all the while pinning it. Then he repeats the roll on the left side, starting slightly lower, to create a “U” shape when the twists meet at the nape. Hanlon mists Aveda Air Control Hair Spray to smooth flyaways while bobby pinning the twists, and finishes with Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine to accentuate the curves of the style. “The result is an intersection of romance and pure modernity,” Bregazzi notes—a look Virginia Woolf wouldn’t shy away from. —Meredith Turley/Beauty Etc.
