This holiday season, Sweis played Santa at Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach with a generous donation of toys, supplies and funds for new iPads. Miller Children’s provides specialized pediatric care for babies, children and teens ranging from general pediatrics to cancer and blood disorders and intensive care. Their Child Life Program helps to educate parents and children about the medical care and process, while bringing a sense of normalcy through playtime in one of their five playrooms. The program relies on donations from companies like Sweis to provide the materials needed to keep children entertained and engaged during their stay at the hospital.
Rita Goshert, Clinical Operations Manager of Child Life Department, accepted wagons full of toys from Karl and Teresa Sweis, took the two on a tour of the hospital and talked about the special needs of the Child Life Program. The iPads are especially helpful to the Child Life Specialists who use them as an age-appropriate way to educate children about their medical procedure.
“At Sweis it is our ongoing mission to give back to our community. This year our goal was to touch the lives of the many children that pass through Miller Children’s,” says Karl Sweis CEO/Founder Sweis Inc. “During Christmas there are many children who have to spend the night in the hospital. Now they will have presents to open which will hopefully bring some joy to their holiday.”
At Miller Children’s, young patients are regarded as heroes who must rely on the philanthropic community to continue to help provide life-saving care. For more information on how you can support the hospital visit MillerChildrens.org.
