Frequently Asked Questions

With over 600,000 licensees, the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (Board) often receives hundreds of emails a day.  While the Board is happy to assist licensees and consumers with any questions they may have, we’d like to highlight some frequently asked questions that you may be curious to learn about as well.

Question: My license expired in 2020. Am I eligible for the renewal fee waiver?

Answer: The renewal fee waiver applies to licenses that expire in 2021 and 2022.  After you renew this cycle, you will receive the renewal fee waiver automatically in 2022.

Question: I’m moving to another state. How do I transfer my California license?

Answer: Contact the licensing agency of the state you are moving to for licensing requirements regarding transferring your California license to their state. All states have different requirements. You may need to request a Certification of Licensure from the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. You can request the Board to send a certification of licensure to the state of your choice by mail or online

Question: My last name has changed.  How do I update my name on my license?

Answer:  To submit a name change, complete the Change of Name form and mail or email it to the Board along with 1) a certified court order, marriage certificate, or dissolution of marriage AND 2) a current government-issued photo identification.  If you submit your name change by mail and would like a duplicate license, include a $10 check or money order with your form and check the appropriate box.  If you submit your name change by email and would like a duplicate license, please wait until we verify your name has been changed.  Then you may order a duplicate license online.

Question:  I bought a barbershop. How do I update the ownership?

Answer:  You must apply for a new establishment license anytime a licensed establishment has a change of ownership.  Mail a completed Establishment Application with the required attachments and fee to the Board.  Please verify you submit all requested attachments with your application.

As a reminder, most general questions are answered on the Board’s Frequently Asked Questions page.  If you still need to email the Board, be sure to include your Name, License Type, and License Number with your question or request so we may assist you.
