Every year, we honor 30 young colorists under 30 to find out what makes them so talented and successful. Get to know 2017 honoree Dylan Prescott in our interview with him:

What inspired you to become a colorist?
I have been hairdressing for 3 1/2 years now. I absolutely love my career. I work for Matrix as a brand ambassador. Matrix has taken me so far as a hairdresser and also as a person—truly has expanded my comfort zone. I love staying up-to-date on the latest trends and learning new techniques.
Color is something that I have always loved playing with. In beauty school, I loved coloring mannequins and cutting bobs. One of my favorite colorists is George Papanikolas. I love his work! He creates high fashion tones that still look natural.
What are your goals?
I want to become a global artist and eventually open my own salon and create my own brand. I want to inspire hairdressers to do more than stand behind the chair.
Any accomplishments so far in your career you’re proud of?
Becoming an educator was a huge accomplishment for me. It brought me one step closer to my goal. Being an educator has helped me grow as a stylist and as a person. I absolutely love it. I'm always learning something new.
What are your specialties?
I specialize in balayage and highlights. With these two techniques, you can create a major change with little upkeep.
What do you love most about being a colorist?
What I love most about being a colorist is seeing my clients' face and the end of their transformations. I love making them feel better about themselves and building their confidence.
Who would you consider to be your mentors/role models, and why?
Lacy Herron would be my mentor/role model because she pushes me outside my comfort zone and helps me grow. She works so hard to make sure that we have all we need to succeed. Plus, she is a bomb hairdresser.
Please share a hair color, prep or color care tip:
The key to any successful color is proper formulation, clean sections, and clean application. In order for my clients to maintain their color, I send them home with Biolage ColorLast shampoo and conditioner.
What is your favorite color trend/technique of the moment?
My favorite color trend at the moment is balayage. You can create unique customized colors for every client.
