Held on February 7, the Critics' Choice Awards honored and celebrated achievements in television programming and filmmaking over the past year. With awards season in full swing, we are keeping an eye on the defining hair trends of the year so far. While the Golden Globes celebrated vintage Hollywood, and the Grammys brought bold glamour to the forefront, the Critics' Choice Awards were all about cool, chic vibes. Below, we share three tutorials for three updos sported by the stars at this year's event.
Keri Russell's Low Knot
Celebrity Hairstylist Brian Magallones (@brianmagallones) used products from milk_shake to create a chic, low knot for Keri Russell at the Critics' Choice Awards, where she was both a presenter and nominee.
"For the 2025 Critics Choice, Keri dressed from head to toe in beautiful, classic and chic Chanel," Magallones says. "I wanted to keep it cool and effortless, yet classic and chic, so I decided to pull her hair back off her face and put it low knot — imperfectly perfect, keeping with the cool, chic vibe."
How-To:
- Before blow-drying freshly washed hair, I lightly misted her hair with the milk_shake incredible milk leave in treatment, which helped detangle her hair.
- Next, I rubbed two drops of the milk_shake incredible serum between my palms and ran it through her hair to help prevent frizz and add shine. It helped give her hair a smooth, glass-like shine.
- Next, I blow dried hair to get it nice and smooth, and, as I did, I misted each section with milk_shake flexible hairspray for light hold.
- The next step was to curl her hair with a large barrel curling iron, again, misting with milk_shake flexible hairspray along the way. Beauty tip: Anytime you put hair into a bun, always curl first with a curling iron to help mold it into the style and prevent flyaways. It gives a much cleaner finished look.
- I then sprayed some milk_shake lifestyling dry shampoo into her hair to give it some texture. I then finger combed her hair back and secured it in a low ponytail. I applied some milk_shake lifestyling smoothing cream to the ponytail to smooth it out. Next, I formed the bun by twisting the hair around the base, pinning it into a messy bun.
- I finished the look with a good spray of milk_shake lifestyling extra strong hairspray and a light mist of milk-shake incredible oil to keep her hair holding and shining all night long.
Marissa Bode's Updo with Fringe
Celebrity Hairstylist Graham Nation (@grahamnation) used Marc Anthony True Professional to create a glamorous updo for "Wicked" star Marissa Bode.
“The look was inspired by effortless glamour," Nation says. "We wanted to create a soft, timeless and glamorous look for Marissa.”
How-To:
- Starting with the products, use Marc Anthony True Professional’s Grow Long Ultimate Blowout Spray. This is perfect to achieve smooth and blown-out hair that will last.
- Using the FHI Heat Versaphere Pro 6-in-1 Multi-Styler and a round brush, start drying with as much volume as possible.
- Once dry, use the FHI Heat Platform Bounce Pro Curler in 1.5 inch to polish the ends and curl the hair.
- Since the style will live on the top of her head, take all the hair at the back of her head from ear to ear, and create a ponytail on the top of her head.
- Then, attach the front pieces to the ponytail and start creating the bun you want to see.
- Finish by smoothing the fringe with a 1" curling iron, and use the new Marc Anthony True Professional Style Flex 2-in-1 Adjustable Hairspray on the high setting to tame fly aways and set the look. It’s the perfect finishing touch!
Margaret Qualley's Twisted Updo
After creating a gorgeous 1960s-inspired 'do for Margaret Qualley at the Golden Globes, Anna Cofone (@annacofone) once again styled "The Substance" star for the Critics' Choice Awards, where she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Cofone used Remi Catchet extensions to create a unique twisted updo for Qualley.
“Taking inspiration from the old Hollywood era of timeless elegance, the graphic shape included a slicked back ponytail, with the addition of rope twists in contrasting colors, to create a striking red carpet moment," Cofone shares.
How-To:
- I prepped Margaret's hair with ABC Glow Serum and smoothed her texture with Tymo Ring and Tymo Airflow to remove all volume.
- I then prepped Remi Cachet Human Hair ponytail 24inch with ABC working hairspray, before creating soft waves using the Tymo Curlgo.
- I used ABC Pliable Paste to slick back base and control flyaways. Then, I attached Remi Cachet ponytail and secured rope twist extensions.
- I added more waves using the Tymo Cues and used Authentic Beauty Concept Texture Spray to brush out curl set in the ponytail and create volume at the base.
- I used Authentic Beauty Concept Glow Spray Serum to enhance color and shine and working hairspray all over to set the look.
