Chappell Roan is one of the next pop it-girls. After opening for Olivia Rodrigo on the GUTS tour earlier this year, Roan skyrocketed to fame. Since then, she has performed at major festivals like Coachella, the Governor's Ball and Lollapalooza, drawing the biggest crowds the Chicago festival has ever seen. To top it all off, she won Best New Artist at the VMAs in September.
One thing about the artist that stands out is her unique style. The many statement-making outfits, makeup and hairstyles she's sported throughout the year serve as perfect inspiration for a Halloween costume.
Influencer and podcaster Jake Shane is one of many individuals dressing as Roan for Halloween. Shane debuted his take of Roan's NPR Tiny Desk performance look on the Halloween special of his podcast Therapuss with Benito Skinner. Celebrity hairstylist Gregg Lennon Jr created a custom wig for Shane as part of the costume.
“For Jake, we were going for maximum authenticity when recreating Chappell’s look from her NPR Tiny Desk performance," Lennon Jr shares. "We made sure to pay homage to every detail in hairdresser Dom Forletta’s creation from the rich copper color to the placement of the butterflies and cigarettes in the hair. The devil is definitely in the details.”
Below, Lennon Jr shares his tutorial for creating the look.
Chappell Roan Tiny Desk Hair Recreation
- First, we started with a base wig in color #613 (light blonde) using The Hair Shop Smart Tab Tape-In extensions and Skin Weft extensions, also in color #613.
- We then used #mydentity professional demi-permanent warm series color to achieve Chappell Roan's copper tone by mixing equal parts of Midnight Flame and Midnight Love, then applying the color to the wig.
- I crimped the first 3 inches of the roots around the entire wig to create cushion and volume and backcombed the crimped section around the head for extra volume and texture.
- Starting at the nape, we applied 24” Smart Tab Tape-In extensions for maximum length, placing the extensions just below the teasing and stopped halfway up the head.
- We then backcombed the crown area to form a large, voluminous ball and secured it with large bobby pins for a bouffant look.
- Then, we smoothed the front layer of the wig over the bouffant, covering the teased section, and locked it in place with hairspray.
- Applying one side of the Skin Weft extensions just behind the bangs, we added density to the veiling layer and smoothed the hair back securing it with hairspray.
- Finally, we trimmed the bangs to sit just above the brow bone.
- We then placed a tiara just behind the bangs and accessorized the wig with butterflies!
