The trauma of plastic, leaky gloves not fit-for-purpose that contribute to out-of-control beauty waste has been resolved by a salon team determined to be more sustainable.

Two years ago the Cutler team, working out of salons in New York and California, finally decided enough was enough with the bad gloves that got in the way of safely creating fabulous color. Led by Rodney Cutler and Tyson Kennedy, co-owners of the couture hair brand, they researched and developed an alternative and, once it was perfected, started supplying their nine locations with sustainable gloves specifically designed for stylists, by stylists.

“Colorists need lightweight gloves that are tender to the touch and have a tailored fit that don’t leak or distract us when we are in creative mode,” says Rodney, who splits his time between New York, West Hollywood and the fashion circuit. “We need to forget we are even wearing gloves.”

Tyson is focused on the brand’s legacy, adding: “At Cutler, we were going through thousands of gloves a month, which weighed on our mind, particularly as we were making an effort to become more sustainable. We mandate gloves for safety, but we don’t want to be part of the horrendous impact they are having on our environment. When we couldn’t find a solution fit for stylists, we designed our own. After the successful launch in our own salons, we decided to team up with Sustain Beauty Co to make them available to all stylists.”

In the US more than 820 million nitrile gloves are used once and disposed of every day by various sectors. They go to the landfill, where they can take up to 500 years to break down. In beauty, most stylists have access only to general-use gloves, which are uncomfortable and leaky, driving some to sacrifice safety for their client’s results and opt out of protecting their hands. Cutler's sustainable glovesCutler Sustainable GlovesCourtesy of Sustain Beauty Co

“We are really excited to be partnering with a stylist-founded brand that really put their heart and minds to designing these gloves,” says Valorie Tate, founder of Sustain Beauty Co, which has rigorous standards required for all its products. “Their goal was to create a sustainable, comfortable and tailored glove with a longer cuff that felt so light you would forget you were wearing them. The result is the Cutler Pro Glove designed using new technology that makes these nitrile-based gloves biodegradable.”

The Cutler Pro Gloves are now available anywhere you shop with Sustain Beauty Co, including sustainbeauty.co, where stylists and salons can set up an auto-ship or purchase one-time and text to order when they need to replenish. It means you can make gloves the last thing you think of when you are wearing them, when you dispose of them and when you need to replenish them.
