Redken Artist Matthew Tyldesley Creates a 1950s Inspired Look

For this look from the Urbane collection, Redken Artist Matthew Tyldesley looked to the past to influence the future. “Ideally I wanted to showcase business and fashion, inspired by big city life—amazing hair paired with fashion for everyday men,” he explains. Although classic grooming from the 1950s inspired the shape and cut, the color is completely modern. “I love marrying color and cut, so I thought I would include hair color that is trending and appropriate for men,” he says. “The result is sharp, moody and fashion forward.”

To create the ’50s-inspired look, Tyldesley used a scissor-over-comb technique in the nape and side areas. “A heavy weight line was created on the sides and back (diagonal back) to keep the length and build weight,” he says. Next, “half-inch sections were brought down with no elevation and cut parallel to the section,” he continues. “Haircuts that are versatile and have volume, combined with or without facial hair, are trending now.”

For the color, Tyldesley first prelightened the hair. “I did a soft highlight using Redken’s Blonde Icing and 20-volume developer plus pH-Bonder,” he reveals. Next, he toned the hair using Redken Shades EQ Gloss 09T and Crystal Clear 000 with processing solution. “The color is relevant and appropriate for male clients,” he says.
To style the hair, Tyldesley flap- wrapped hair using a Sam Villa paddle brush and blowdryer. He lightly teased hair at the scalp then finger-styled with Redken Move Ability 05 Lightweight Defining Cream-Paste. A generous spritz of Control Addict 28 Extra High-Hold Hairspray locked in the look.

It’s important to guide guys on how to properly use a hairdryer if they want a coif like this, Tyldesley says. After showing them the ropes, “Allow the client to try using hairdryer themselves, supervised by you,” he adds. “Be sure to follow up with the client the next time to see how they’re doing.”
And remember, hair oils aren’t only for women, Tyldesley points out. “Try adding products such as Redken All Soft Argan-6 Multi-Care Oil to a hair paste, such as Rough Paste 12 Working Material or Move Ability 05, to add a touch of shine and tame unruly or course hair when molding and shaping.”
