The Pantone Color Institute has chosen its Color of the Year for 2025: Mocha Mousse.

The Pantone Color of the Year program highlights the relationship between color and culture. Each year, Pantone selects a color that captures a global mood and an attitude, reflecting collective desire in the form of a single, distinct hue. For 2025, PANTONE 17-1230 was chosen to capture a need for comfort.

"For Pantone Color of the Year 2025, we look to a mellow brown hue whose inherent richness and sensorial and comforting warmth extends further into our desire for comfort, and the indulgence of simple pleasures that we can gift and share with others," shares Laurie Pressman, the Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute.

When you think of Mocha Mousse, you likely think of coffee and chocolate — two rich, delectable treats that are go-to staples for many when they are in need of a sweet treat or a morning pick-me-up. The shade is all about indulgence, comfort and contentment.

What Does Pantone's Color of the Year Mean For the Hair Industry?

Pantone's Color of the Year influences trends for the year. To celebrate the announcement of The Color of the Year, Pantone is partnering with brands like Motorola, Pura, Ipsy, Society6 and more to launch products in shade Mocha Mousse, which means the color will be everywhere.

Because of this, we expect 2025 to be a very special year for brunettes. While this color is always a staple, it's likely to only surge in popularity in the new year.

We're already seeing brunette trends like Glazed Donut, Espresso and Mushroom Hair take over social feeds. These gourmand hair trends embrace warmth, richness and evoke a more earthy look. As it relates to these trends, clients will likely seek out blended, lived-in options that have a seamless grow out and appear more natural, so they can extend their time in-between salon visits. Clients are also embracing the shine, looking for glassy and glossy hair. You're going to want to stock up on hair gloss

Make sure you set aside proper time for these appointments and practice placement, lifting, glossing and toning, so you can be ready to create what is sure to be a trending color in 2025!
