With fall quickly approaching, there is no better time than now to share some of my favorite tips for
formulating and maintaining red hair that will keep your clients coming back wanting those autumn hues
year round. I hope that you find these quick tips helpful, and they are something you come back to the next time you are doing a red client.
Tip 1. Add gold.
When it comes to formulating, I give one piece of advice to almost everyone who will listen: add gold to
your formula. Whether you are looking to achieve a deep auburn or a vivid copper, gold will add depth
and richness to your color and keep your red from looking hollow or too pink.
Tip 2. Reach for 30 vol.
When creating bright coppers and strawberry blondes, don’t be afraid to reach for the 30 volume, even on
the root. You will really want that lift in order to get the brightness that you are looking to see in a copper.
Tip 3. Avoid adding neutral.
Finally, as far as formulation goes, if you are looking for vibrancy avoid adding any natural/neutral to your
formula. This will not only dull the vibrancy but will sometimes brown out your color.
Tip 4. Turn down the heat.
I often get questions about at-home red maintenance, and the first – most important – thing is to use
low/minimal heat. Hot tools like curling irons and flat irons will fade your color that much quicker, as well
as damage the hair itself.
Tip 5. Add heat protectant.
If you can’t stay away from heat, lowering the temperature and adding a heat
protectant to your routine will help to slow the fade.
Tip 6. Add a red shampoo/conditioner
Recently, I have started adding a red color depositing shampoo or conditioner to my weekly haircare
routine. It’s just enough of a kick to keep your color looking fresh in between appointments.
