Q&A with Brittney

Beauty Launchpad (BLP): What is a fun fact about you?

Brittney Tester (BT): I use to work in construction.

BLP: How did you get your start in the industry?

BT: When asking myself in school what job I would enjoy for the rest of my life, cosmetology was the only career that came to mind. My family agreed to help support me as long as I got a degree — to be sure this is what I truly want. After going to community college for business and receiving my associates, I started my path with hair at Paul Mitchell the School in Bloomington.

BLP: What is your proudest accomplishment/achievement in the industry so far?

BT: Becoming a milk_shake National Artist.

BLP: What is your current favorite hair/nail trend?

BT: I love the sunnier colors we’re seeing — the soft golden blonde and bright dimensional brunettes. The subtle warmth of these shades give the hair life and look so flattering.

BLP: What is a tip you have for your fellow beauty pros who are looking to grow their following on socials?

BT: Not only should you engage with others through your socials, but make your content engaging! Ask a question, make a poll, etc. This further builds connection.

BLP: What advice would you give to the younger version of yourself just starting out in the industry, looking back on your whole career?

BT: The hard times is when you learn the most important lessons! You are not going to get everything right from the get go, so don’t be too hard on yourself.

BLP: What is a tip/technique you’ve learned that’s helped you be more efficient/successful in your services or business?

BT: Repeat others words back to them. This is so helpful in all interactions everything from consultations to conflicts. This allows you to process information and retain it better, becoming an active listener and it also helps others feel heard and validated.

BLP: Who is someone you consider a mentor/role model in the industry?

BT: Sharon Blain. Her work is iconic, but the value she places on education and excellence is inspiring.

BLP: What is a practice/ritual you have to care for your mental health and set boundaries between your work and personal life?

BT: I spend limited time on my phone at home. I’ll set a timer and no matter where I’m at with something I have to set it down when it’s up. I have two small kids, and I think it’s important they don’t see me constantly with the phone.

BLP: What do you think needs to change in the industry to help beauty pros continue to grow and thrive?

BT: How we view one another in this profession. Whether you are a newer stylist, a seasoned stylist or another salon in the area, we are all peers, not opponents. When we respect and regard each other, clients and others outside the industry will do the same.

BLP: What is a career goal you have for yourself?

BT: I have always dreamt of styling hair for a major shoot or campaign. It’s also a goal of mine to do platform work for a major show.
