Q&A

Beauty Launchpad (BLP): What is a fun fact about you?

Emily Stephens (ES): I grew up as a theater kid! I absolutely love to act, sing and dance. I even got to attend a performing arts high school part time.

BLP: How did you get your start in the industry?

ES: Right after cosmetology school, I started taking class after class, whatever I could afford. At the time, I was also working as an assistant for a commission-based salon. I couldn't take clients yet, so on my days off, I would come in and take “models" — yes, for the practice, but the biggest perk was gaining some content to build my social media, which ultimately helped me build my client base.

BLP: Who is someone you consider a mentor/role model in the industry?

ES: I think Adina Pignatare (@adina_pignatare) is one of my favorite industry role models out there. Her authenticity, dedication and drive to help others are admirable.

BLP: What is your proudest achievement in the industry thus far?

ES: My proudest achievement is honestly my clients. Nothing beats having someone come back because they trust you will take care of their hair. I truly have some of the most loyal, kind — and let's not forget beautiful  clients around. I don't know what I did to deserve them, but I am so grateful. It makes my job so much more fun and rewarding.

BLP: What is your favorite piece of advice you’ve been given by a fellow industry/hair pro?

ES: A quote I love when I need some advice is: “Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold.” – Helen Keller. It's a nice reminder to not live in doubt or fear – that a “risk-free” life isn't realistic because we have unpredictable stuff happen every day. You can stay “safe” all you want, but it won't guarantee success. If anything, it might make you miss some great opportunities.

BLP: What is a hair tip/technique you’ve learned that’s helped you be more efficient/successful behind the chair?

ES: Probably a business tip: to be as open and honest as possible with your clients. Open communication is key.

BLP: What is your favorite hair trend currently?

ES: Blowouts and hot rollers.

BLP: Who or what inspires your work?

ES: My parents: They are constantly encouraging me to go above and beyond with my creativity and passion. Support like that inspires my work everyday.

BLP: What changes would you like to see in the industry to better help hair pros grow and thrive?

ES: I would love to see more authentic reviews and less paid-for positive reviews to create a more transparent environment to keep the reputation in this industry as trustworthy as possible.

BLP: What is a career goal you have for yourself?

ES: To find and maintain a healthy work/life balance.
