Textured hair care specialist Camille Janae is the owner of Mahogany and Rose Salon in Sacramento, California. Whether she is educating the professional community on textured strands or empowering her clients to embrace their natural hair, one thing is certain: She looks good while doing it. We spoke with this clued-up stylist to learn what inspires her covetable wardrobe.

Beauty Launchpad (BLP): What three words would you use to describe your personal style?

Camille Janae (CJ): Hmm, that’s tough, but I guess I’d say relaxed, feminine, with a touch of edgy.

BLP: How has your style changed over the years?

CJ: I used to wear a lot more colors and patterns. Over time, I have shifted to wearing mostly black and neutrals with some pops of color. This is mostly because it makes decision-making easier when it comes to putting outfits together.

BLP: Is there an article of clothing/piece of jewelry/tattoo that holds a lot of meaning for you? Why?

CJ: My favorite tattoo is of the continent of Africa, with a quote inside from a poem by Maya Angelou that reads: “Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave.” It encourages me to go after whatever I want, partly in honor of my enslaved ancestors who were talented, but whose opportunities were stolen by enslavement and oppression.

BLP: What is the best piece of fashion/beauty advice you have ever received?

CJ: I’ve never personally received any fashion advice, but I resonate with the idea that you look best when you feel confident; it’s about how you carry yourself.

BLP: Who is your style icon?

CJ: I’m inspired by so many Black women fashion creators online. I don’t have one in particular because I pull from many to come up with my own style. A few that stand out in my mind are @considermylovely, @thenotoriouskia, @iknowlee and @denisiotruitt (all on Instagram).
