When we’re not cracking up at the hilarious hairstylist-inspired TikToks Drew Inge makes, we’re gushing over the scroll-stopping, lived-in hair looks the Beauty Launchpad educator creates. We caught up with Inge to discuss fashion advice, style icons and the ever-evolving personal style of a hairdresser.
Beauty Launchpad (BLP): What three words would you use to describe your personal style?
Drew Inge (DI): Comfortable: I spend most of my time working and, after being behind the chair for more than 10 years, I’ve learned that it’s more important to be comfortable than fashionable. Eclectic: Most of my friends will tell you that my style can go from dressed up, to streetwear, to athleisure, to preppy, to somewhere in between—all on a weekly basis. Individual: I like to choose clothing that represents me—not necessarily the items I wear to work, but when I’m outside of work, most of my clothes truly express who I am as a person.
BLP: How has your style changed over the years?
DI: When I first started doing hair, I used to dress up every day behind the chair. My style back then was very clean cut and preppy. When I was in high school I was an emo kid; I had long jet-black hair and wore a lot of band tees, skintight jeans and combat boots. As I got older, I became a lot more casual. Now, I’d say my style somehow blends all of those looks together.
BLP: Is there an article of clothing/piece of jewelry that holds a lot of meaning for you? Why?
DI: There are several things I own that hold sentimental value to me, including a hoodie from my ex’s college and a T-shirt from a concert I attended.
BLP: What is the best piece of fashion/beauty advice you have ever received?
DI: Create your own style. It took me a long time to figure out what mine was going to be, but now I draw inspiration from everything, and I like to think my style is unique.
BLP: Who is your style icon?
DI: James Dean. Maybe that’s cliché, but his style was very cool, comfortable and timeless. If you ever look back at images of him, nothing he wore screams the decade he was in, which isn’t something that’s easily achievable. T-shirts with dress slacks and a peacoat, or a turtleneck paired with a cool jacket, some jeans and boots—these looks never go out of style and exude confidence.
