Held Friday Sept. 6 to Wednesday, Sept. 11, New York Fashion Week showcased iconic designers, runway shows and the latest trends in fashion, hair and beauty. Rutger (@rutgerhair) collaborated with uberliss to create the hair looks for the Grace Ling, Who Decides War and Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2025 shows. Below, Rutger shares what inspired each of the hairstyles he created, how to create them at home and more.
Grace Ling SS25 Show
For the Grace Ling SS25 Show, Rutger created understated "primitive chic" hairstyles.
"Windswept hair, slightly battered by the elements, was the initial inspiration for the show," shares Rutger. "but during the fitting we decided to somewhat tone it down to a slightly cleaner feel and landed on a hairstyle divided in a center part where we used wisps of baby hair or wet hair strands to frame the models faces with. Some models were braided and wore their hair either back or in a center part as well."
He used Uberliss Flexin Hairspray, Uberliss Bond Healing Spray and Uberliss Frizz Elixir to create the looks for the show because they kept the hair flexible and malleable during the styling process.
How-To:
- Apply plenty of Uberliss Bond Healing Spray on clean dry hair until the hair is completely damp, leaving out some of the hairs around the hairline.
- Create a center part and work in a few layers of Uberliss Flexin Hairspray.
- Dry the hair using a hairdryer with a diffuser and your hands.
- When almost dry, stop the hairdryer and leave the rest of the hair to air dry.
- Apply Uberliss Frizz Elixir on the baby hairs that were left out earlier.
"I loved the show," Rutger adds. "Grace Ling is an extremely talented designer."
Who Decides War SS25 Show
To create the "urban Victorian chic styles" for the Who Decides War SS25 Show, Rutger used Uberliss Flexin Hairspray and Uberliss Dry Shampoo to give the hair just the right texture and hold.
"I was looking to translate elements of Victorian hairstyles to a more cool, timeless street hair style," explains Rutger. "The braided hairstyles added a sense of elaborate chicness to the collection while at the same time looking modern, effortless and cool on the models."
How-To:
- Prep the hair with Uberliss Dry Shampoo, brush it through using a flat (Mason Pearson if you have) brush and blow it out using a hairdryer.
- Divide the hair in a center part and different sections throughout the rest of the head (I created 7 sections total). The front top sections got a regular braid framing the models face on each side, and the other five sections were braided into fish braids.
- When the braids were in the hair (each secured with an elastic band), I started pinning them together on the back of the head, creating almost a mullet kind of style.
- Finish with the Uberliss Flexin Hairspray.
To create the style, Rutger advises using French pins to pin the braids together.
"I’ve been working with this label ever since they started showing their collection during NYFW. Every season their show seems to get a bigger audience and their show locations are more spectacular," adds Rutger of the show.
Jason Wu SS25 Show
The Jason Wu SS25 Show called for sophisticated, early '90s grunge looks.
"The collection from Jason Wu was in some ways minimal, but very chic. The hairstyles for the show had to relate to that same world," Rutger says.
He used Uberliss Bond Healing Spray, Uberliss Flexin Hairspray and Uberliss RituOil to give the right shine and hold to the hair.
How-To:
- Apply plenty of Uberliss Bond Healing Spray on dry hair until the hair feels slightly damp.
- Blow out any waves until the hair is straight.
- For the ponytail looks, brush all the hair back and secure the hair in the nape of the neck using a string elastic.
- Finish the look with Uberliss Flexin Hairspray and add shine to the ponytail using the Uberliss Rituoil serum.
"The Jason Wu show is always one of the biggest shows during NYFW. This year, it was held at a fantastic outdoor venue in front of the Hudson Yards, which was stunning," Rutger shares.
