The key to being a stand-out as a stylist is knowing how to use a tool in a variety of ways to achieve different results. Allowing versatility with your tools not only maximizes your space but also saves you time and money.

Roger Molina, Sam Villa, ArTeam, and Master Stylist at Lunatic Fringe, breaks down the difference between twist-out and twist-on waves, showcasing how a subtle change in technique can influence the finished look.

 Guidelines:

  • Take vertical sections from the front parting
  • Section width should match the width of the iron
  • Use a Sam Villa Artist Series 2-in-1 Marcel Iron & Wand 1.5

Twist-Out Waves: A more open pattern that is fluid, and the soft texture groups together

  • Insert the Marcel iron from above
  • Wrap back and away with a subtle flat twist on the bottom and a flat twist at the top
  • Slide down and repeat down the section

Twist-On Waves: A more defined, polished wave that breaks up independently

  • Insert the Marcel iron from the bottom
  • Working back and away, wrap the section and then twist out
  • Wrap back up to the twist spot to give it heat – the tighter the twist, the tighter the curl will be
  • Slide down and repeat down the section

You don't have to complicate achieving a finished look. The magic is in how the hair is wrapped, released, and directed.
