Hard Water Build-Up: How Stylists Can Spot It, Treat It and Educate Clients

Adobe Stock 532160815

We all know hard water buildup isn't a magical problem that just appears one day. Clients sit down in your chair, completely unaware of the buildup in their hair, making their hair harder to manage, or, in cases with color-treated hair, causing the color to fade faster.

Symptoms to look out for can range from thinning and dry scalp, stiffness/brittleness, to breakage. (in extreme cases)

Shampoos and conditioners get the job done with respect to removing day-to-day excess oil and dirt, but when dealing with clearing heavy mineral buildup, clarifying shampoos are the way to go. Using the right products and knowing how to educate your client on their hair health goes a long way in building your expertise as a stylist and your clients' trust.

Let's dive into products stylists aren't just incorporating into their appointments with clients but also sending clients home with.

Oli G- Pure Detox Clarifying Shampoo

This Pure Detox Clarifying Shampoo strips weekly buildup, lifts hard water minerals, clarifies the scalp and resets the hair, leading to lighter and brighter-looking hair.

Stylist Functionality:

Pure Detox is Step 1 in the Oli G system, making every service and downstream product in the system actually work. Cleared cuticles let peptides, masks, color, and chemical services penetrate, so stylists can skip the reset and treatments sit on a coated surface, so results plateau.

How to educate your client on the product use

  • The "two shampoos" story: most people use one shampoo for everything, but hair needs two. Pure Detox resets (weekly); the daily wash maintains.
  • The diagnostic hook: if hair feels heavy by midweek, won't hold a style, or the last color didn't pop the way it should, buildup is the answer.
  • The metaphor: it resets hair "to factory settings" for a clean canvas.
  • Simple cadence: weekly for most; twice weekly for swimmers, heavy stylers, or hard-water households; always before color, chemical service, or a takedown. It's a periodic reset, not a daily.

Cécred- Clarifying Shampoo & Scalp Scrub

Clarifying Shampoo Front

This shampoo and scalp scrub deeply cleanses and gently exfoliates your hair and scalp to remove buildup without stripping the hair.

Stylist Functionality:

According to the brand, the clarifying Shampoo & Scalp Scrub’s formula is designed to break down stubborn residue, support a cleaner scalp, and enhance functionality. The incorporated physical and chemical exfoliants help to clean dead skin cells and support a healthy scalp.

How to educate your client on the product use

According to the brand, clients who experience these should be recommended the clarifying Shampoo & Scalp Scrub:

  • Utilizes many styling products, such as gels, mousses, or hairsprays.
  • Hair feels weighed down or greasy, even after regular washing.
  • Experiencing itchiness or buildup on your scalp.
  • Prepping for treatments like a deep conditioner or hair mask.

Davines- Beautiful Things Line

Davines Beautiful Things Leave In Mask

Davines Beautiful Things line is a detox and repair in one step, designed to grab onto metal and mineral buildup and lift it out of the hair like a magnet instead of just masking it. Then the Beautiful Things leave-in mask puts back all the softness, shine, and protection, so the hair is stronger and more resilient afterward. It's detox and repair in one step.

Stylist Functionality: Davines’ Beautiful Things in-salon system is a quick step that gently removes buildup from the hair, such as hard water, chlorine, and old product that’s silently working against color. After the treatment, the hair looks brighter and shinier, and the color holds longer. The swift routine offers a simple add-on that benefits both clients and stylists.

How to educate your client on the product use:

  • As stylists, we can feel or even smell the build-up on someone’s hair during a consultation, and that’s the perfect moment to discuss the product; it sells itself once you know someone will benefit from it.
  • Explaining to clients that their hair is holding on to dulling buildup that can be cleared during their appointment leads most clients to say yes to the service, as they understand and can feel the difference immediately.

Behind the Chair Perspective

Hairstylist and owner of Rockit Studio in Schaumburg, Illinois, Elyse Rox leads with a science-backed, myth-busting approach that has made her a fresh and trusted voice as an online hair educator.

Rox unpacks the first step in recognizing the signs your client's hair has hard water buildup before you recommend products.

“The first thing I notice is texture. [If] the hair feels stiff, brittle, almost crunchy, and it doesn’t move the way it should. Color-treated clients will often tell me their tone is off or their color is fading faster than expected. Blondes go brassy faster. The hair looks dull even right after a fresh service; treatments stop working. Clients will tell me they’ve been deep conditioning consistently, but nothing is helping. That’s a red flag for me every single time, “ says Rox.

Hairstylist Cryistal Chaos uses her background in hair care science and her speciality in color to uncover the “why” behind the processes and rules used every day behind the chair, and shares it online to inform and educate stylists.

When it comes to recommending products to clients, Cryistal first looks out for chelating agents and the pH in products.

“[Chelating agents] are what bind to the metals and remove them from the hair. In the ingredients list, these agents are: EDTA, citric acid, or sodium citrate,” says Cryistal. “ A good chelating product should be closer to the hair's natural PH or is clearly formulated to rebalance after use. Meaning that it has a sister product that is meant to follow it up to rebalance the PH.”

Cryistal recommends her clients use hard water products based on the area they live in. Knowing what’s in their water plays a major role in recommending the appropriate products to your clients.

“My recommendations of products have drastically changed based on my location. Now, when I make recommendations, it’s out of necessity, whereas in my previous location it would’ve been preventative.

Cryistal notes that after her recent move to Indianapolis from Virginia Beach, she saw a major change in her scalp health.

“While I never had any serious scalp or hair issues while in VB, once moving to Indianapolis, my scalp specifically was in the worst shape it had ever been in. That's because Indianapolis has some of the hardest water in the continental US,” says Cryistal

Beyond product recommendations, Cryistal recommends that all her clients have a water filter to get them started because healthy hair starts at home.
