If you're a hairstylist, it's likely that you have countless hair pins at your disposal that are a standard at your work station. They are a common hair tool, and the ultimate styling accessory for holding hair into place for updos, buns, half-up styles and more. With a tool as standard as this, you may think there's little room for innovation, but celebrity hairstylist Damian Monzillo hopes to prove you wrong with his newest innovations.
Monzillo recently developed and created the first professionally curated line of hair pins and ties in the world. His goal was to create accessories that make hairstyling easier, less painful and stronger. He also aimed to create products that stand out from the rest. "There’s a slight curve to each pin, which seamlessly hides them in the hair," Monzillo shared to Marie Claire UK. "Traditional pins have a flat back, waved top and an awkward pointed edge. What makes my pins better is the quality of the steel and workmanship. The steel in my pins gives you the consistent tension that allows you not only to be flexible with your styling choices but to use them significantly longer."
His hair pins can be used by hairstylists and clients alike to create an easier hairstyling experience. Many clients know the struggle and frustration of getting their hair done at the salon, then struggling to recreate the style at home. Monzillo's hairpins aim to change that experience by allowing users to put their hair up quickly, securely and without tons of pins.
Monzillo also wanted to make sure his line was inclusive, catering to all hair types, textures and densities, keeping every strand held securely in place.
"Both thick and fine hair need different amounts of pins but require the same tension to keep the style in place," he says.
Sustainability is also a concern in the industry. More stylists and clients are looking for options that help them reduce waste and be more eco-friendly. Traditional hair pins can often only be used once because they get bent out of shape, leading them to get tossed in the trash once they are removed. Monzillo's pins, however, are recyclable, biodegradable and reusable.
"My primary concept for the line was to be dependable not disposable. We’ve all seen the amount of waste that the beauty and cosmetic industry creates with excess packaging that isn’t reusable, recyclable and doesn’t biodegrade. That’s a huge problem for the environment. I would only put my name on a product that created solutions to these problems. Those connotations speak to the parallel of who I am as a conscious person and the owner of a brand," Monzillo shares.

Monzillo has also developed a line of hair ties and bungees to add to his styling line that are next in his pipeline.
"Bungees are a strong elastic band covered in fabric that has a hook on each side to help you create the cleanest and easiest ponytail," Monzillo explains. "I created 10 cm, 20 cm and 30 cm sizes in blonde, brown and black."
