Locks are getting lofty with these retro-inspired styles.
Designers: Christian Dior, Alberta Ferretti, Diane von Furstenberg, Derek Lam
TREND ALERT: Retro
Dig out your rattail combs and rock-hard hairspray—hairstyling’s soundtrack for fall rewinds to the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s with one constant theme playing throughout them all: major body and maxi-height. The ’60s “babies” at Derek Lam watch their beehives go up, up and away—an exaggerated style that runway fixture Orlando Pita backcombed into sky-high shapes. “We don’t want it to look ordinary,” Pita relates. “It should be spectacular!”
Also spectacular: the swingin’ ’60s chicks at Christian Dior, whose teased strands (another Pita creation) burst into massive proportions. All is not larger than life, however. Follow the leads of more adaptable, streetwise takes, such as Alberta Ferretti’s lightly backcombed crown or Diane Von Furstenberg’s disco-savvy waves, for some body-full inspiration.
