Malibu C Global Educator, hairstylist and clinical trichologist Missy Peterson shares her ultimate guide to scalp care, so your clients can have gorgeous hair in the new year. As a stylist and clinical trichologist, I specialize in scalp issues and wellness. When it comes to hair care, many people focus on shampoo, conditioner and styling products, but often overlook the foundation of healthy hair: the scalp. A well-maintained scalp is essential for vibrant, strong and luscious locks. Whether your clients are dealing with dandruff, an itchy scalp or simply want to improve the health of their hair, investing time in scalp care can make all the difference. Here’s everything you need to know about maintaining a healthy scalp.
Why Scalp Care Matters
The scalp is an extension of your skin as well as a barometer for your health. The scalp is a part of your largest living organ, the skin. The scalp is subject to similar issues, including dryness, oiliness, sensitivity and infections. The scalp houses hair follicles that determine the strength, texture and growth rate of your hair. A neglected scalp can lead to common problems like:
Dandruff: Caused by an overgrowth of yeast or dry skin.
Hair Loss: Often linked to clogged follicles or inflammation.
Itching and Redness: Signs of irritation, inflammation or poor scalp hygiene.
By adopting proper scalp care practices and maintaining a strong at-home routine, you not only address these issues but also create the optimal environment for hair growth.
Signs of a Healthy Scalp
A healthy scalp is the key to beautiful hair. Look out for these indicators:
Minimal Flaking: A healthy scalp doesn’t produce excessive dandruff or dry flakes.
Balanced Oil Production: Your scalp should neither feel too greasy nor overly dry.
No Discomfort: There should be no itching, redness, or irritation.
Strong Hair Growth: Hair should grow consistently with minimal breakage or shedding.
Essential Scalp Care Tips
Here are actionable tips to ensure your scalp remains in top condition:
1. Cleanse Your Scalp Regularly
Shampooing your scalp removes dirt, sweat, oil and product buildup. Choose a shampoo that suits your scalp type. So many people who have scalp issues and/or hair loss space out their shampooing, and that can actually make issues worse.
For oily scalps: Use a clarifying or volumizing shampoo to regulate sebum production.
For dry scalps: Opt for hydrating shampoos with nourishing ingredients like aloe vera or coconut oil.
For sensitive scalps: Use gentle, sulfate-free shampoos to minimize irritation.
Remember to massage your scalp gently during washing to stimulate blood flow and ensure thorough cleansing. Minerals from the water build up on the scalp and hair so making sure you keep that in check is important too.
2. Exfoliate Weekly
Exfoliation isn’t just for your face. Exfoliating the scalp removes dead skin cells and product residue, preventing clogged follicles and promoting hair growth. You can use a scalp scrub or chemical exfoliants with ingredients like salicylic acid. Limit exfoliation to once or twice a week to avoid irritation.

Hydrate and Moisturize
Just like the rest of your skin, your scalp needs moisture. If your scalp feels dry or tight, incorporate a scalp serum, oil or leave-in treatment designed for hydration. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, tea tree oil and certain oils are excellent for nourishing the scalp.
4. Balance Oil Production
An overly oily scalp can lead to greasy hair and clogged pores, while a dry scalp can cause flaking. Avoid over-washing with the wrong shampoo, which can strip natural oils, leading to a vicious cycle of dryness and excessive sebum production. Aim to wash your hair 2–3 times a week or as needed for your hair type and lifestyle. When dealing with a new hair loss client, I always recommend shampooing daily or at least every other day for 30-60 days.
My go to before any recommendations is to do a complete detox of the scalp and hair first. My process is to do a full Head Lab service from Malibu C.
5. Protect Your Scalp from the Sun
Your scalp is just as vulnerable to UV damage as the rest of your skin. Prolonged sun exposure can lead to dryness, irritation and even skin cancer. Wear a hat when spending extended periods outdoors or use a scalp-friendly sunscreen spray.
6. Massage Your Scalp
A regular scalp massage can improve blood circulation, delivering essential nutrients to hair follicles. Use your fingers or a scalp massaging tool for 5–10 minutes daily. It’s a relaxing ritual that can also relieve tension and stress. I love using and recommending scalp scrubbers. The more stimulation your scalp gets, the better.
Collagen: Protein rich foods such as egg whites, chicken, beans and citrus fruits among others will help in keratin production and follicle protection.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Present in fatty fish, walnuts and flaxseeds, these reduce inflammation and dryness.
Zinc and Iron: Essential for cell repair and hair growth, found in leafy greens and lean meats.
Water: Staying hydrated and drinking enough water is essential for scalp and hair health. If you are dehydrated, your skin is tighter and that causes issues with circulation to the scalp. Keep your skin and scalp well hydrated so it is pliable and able to receive nutrients.
8. Choose the Right Hair Care Products
Avoid harsh ingredients. Opt for products enriched with gentle ingredients that suit your scalp's specific needs.
9. Address Scalp Conditions Promptly
If your client is experiencing persistent issues like dandruff, scalp psoriasis, eczema or hair loss issues and you aren’t sure where to turn, find a specialist or a fully certified trichologist in your area to work with you and your client. A trichologist is the professional that bridges the gap from your chair to the dermatologist office.
Common Scalp Care Mistakes
Avoid these pitfalls to maintain a healthy scalp:
Washing too Infrequently: Leaving the scalp dirty and covered in daily oil, dirt and mineral build up can trigger many things. We need to cleanse our scalps like we cleanse our skin. If you are using the correct shampoo and conditioner, then there is absolutely no issue shampooing frequently or even daily. Shampooing does not make your clients hair fall out.
Skipping Conditioner: While conditioner is primarily for your hair, it also provides light moisture to the scalp. Using a leave-in that is also formulated for the scalp is key.
Using Hot Water: Wash your hair with lukewarm water instead, as hot water can dry out the scalp and strip natural oils.
Overloading on Products: Using too many styling products can clog pores and weigh down hair.
Ignoring Signs of Trouble: Persistent flaking, itching or pain should not be ignored.
Your scalp is the foundation of healthy hair, and taking care of it is essential for long-term hair health. By incorporating regular cleansing, hydration and targeted treatments into your routine, you can address common scalp concerns and create the perfect environment for strong, beautiful hair. Pay attention to your scalp’s needs, make adjustments as necessary and enjoy the benefits of a healthy scalp and stunning locks.
With these tips in mind, achieving your hair goals is just a matter of time and care.
