Hair Color How To: Summer Sunset Ombré by Frances Kurucz

Frances Kurucz, hairstylist at Untamed Hair Studio in Fort Collins, CO, recently created this vibrant, multidimensional hair color for her longtime client. Bright magenta blends with hints of orange and subtle pops of purple for a gorgeous, sunset-like effect. Below, Frances shares how she achieved this stunning look.

Says Frances, "I've been working with [this] client for a few years now, and her color gets more intense, vibrant, and dimensional every time we meet!

"I pre-lighten and bring up her ombré every other appointment. At this most recent appointment we did not need to lighten, but when we do I use Joico Vero Creme Lightener and 20 volume on her new growth and the same Creme Lightener with 5 volume on her previous fashion colors to give us a clean, neutral palette if we are changing up the color scheme.

"This time, we simply went right over the faded colors from the time before (pink and purple).

"The formulas for the fashion colors used are as follows:

  • Formula 1: Joico Amethyst Purple
  • Formula 2: PRAVANA Wild Orchid and Magenta
  • Formula 3: PRAVANA Orange and NEON Orange

"Starting at the nape, I dropped a section a couple of inches wide and parted that section vertically into 3 sections.

"I then blended the colors with my hands onto the hair, alternating the sections between purple at the mid-strand with magenta at the ends, and magenta mid-strands with orange ends. I then worked my way up the head, bricklaying the partings for the smaller sections. I let the color sit in the hair until it was dry to the touch to allow the color to fully absorb and prevent bleeding during rinsing.

"I rinsed, lightly shampooed with PRAVANA Nevo Reparative Sulfate-Free Shampoo, and conditioned with Nevo Reparative Conditioner.

"I sprayed PRAVANA VIVIDS Color Protect Sealing Spray on towel-dried hair before applying Nevo Full Volume Volumizing Foam and round-brushing the hair dry, then curled with a 1 1/2-inch curling iron."
