Q&A:
Beauty Launchpad (BLP): What is a fun fact about you?
Shelby Nagel (SN): I grew up on a large cattle ranch.
BLP: How did you get your start in the industry?
SN: I knew I was meant to be in the hair industry after working as a salon receptionist for three years. In 2017, I went to hair school and immediately fell in love with blonding and lived-in looks. After graduating, I joined a salon where I completed an apprenticeship. I had the privilege of working under an incredible salon owner who supported me in developing my signature coloring techniques and refining my specialty—even if it meant taking a little more time with each client. Looking back, I’m amazed at how much I’ve grown both personally and professionally. This industry has shaped so much of who I am and has given me an incredible sense of purpose. I’m grateful to be surrounded by such a supportive community, both in my salon and in the industry as a whole. Being able to do what I love every day is something I’ll never take for granted.
BLP: Who is someone you consider a mentor/role model in the industry?
SN: My friend and former boss, Teresa, has been an incredible mentor and a true wealth of knowledge in the industry. She has been a constant source of support throughout my career, and I will always be grateful to her.
BLP: What is your proudest achievement in the industry thus far?
SN: My proudest achievements include taking the leap to go independent—especially since I’ve only been on this journey for a year. I’m also incredibly proud to have recently joined the Masters of Balayage team. Of course, being featured in Beauty Launchpad’s 30 Under 30 definitely counts because that’s pretty cool, right?
BLP: What is your favorite piece of advice you’ve been given by a fellow industry/hair pro?
SN: To always remain a student. I believe this is such a great piece of advice. It’s a reminder that there is always something to learn from others, no matter how experienced you are. With techniques and styles constantly evolving, it’s essential to keep elevating your skills. Your guests will notice, appreciate and trust you even more because of it!
BLP: What is a hair tip/technique you’ve learned that’s helped you be more efficient/successful behind the chair?
SN: I love applying a hair mask in my guests' hair before combing out a teasylight. This helps remove the tangle, while also strengthening the hair.
BLP: What is your favorite hair trend currently?
SN: Very organic, blended lived-in looks.
BLP: Who or what inspires your work?
SN: There is so much incredible work out there. My inspiration lately has been Natalie Mckell, Taya Tkachuk and Michelle Zeller.
BLP: What changes would you like to see in the industry to better help hair pros grow and thrive?
SN: Improved financial education for stylists to better understand pricing, taxes, budgeting and retirement savings.
BLP: What is a career goal you have for yourself?
SN: I would love to continue building my brand and further refining my craft behind the chair. Another focus for me is enhancing my social media presence and becoming more comfortable with video and showing myself online. I’ve also thought about mentoring younger stylists in the future, helping them grow in their careers the way others have supported me. The people aspect of this industry means so much to me—both the relationships I build with my clients and the connections within the stylist community. It all comes full circle, and it truly feels like we’re working together to create something beautiful. I’m excited to keep growing, learning and hopefully, one day, inspiring and sharing with others.
