We are spotlighting the winners of Beauty Launchpad's 30 Under 30 contest, sponsored by Denman Professional.
Here, you'll get to know Lauren Giles (@creationsbylauren_), a 28-year-old hairstylist, educator and suite owner based out of The Edit & Nalu Salon.
Q&A:
Beauty Launchpad (BLP): What is a fun fact about you?
Lauren Giles (LG): I love everything creative — hair, interior design, cooking, painting, dancing — anything expressive. I see that little girl in her bedroom tracing, coloring and making bracelets turn into a creative adult.
BLP: How did you get your start in the industry?
LG: I always said yes to every opportunity, poured everything into my career, entered into competitions, bet on myself and put myself out there.
BLP: Who is someone you consider a mentor/role model in the industry?
LG: Presley Poe: the way they approach everything with authenticity and openness. Their talent and the way they show up is something I have and will forever look up to.
BLP: What is your proudest achievement in the industry thus far?
LG: I have had the opportunity to win a few things in my career, which have been monumental. There are so many things that come so close. Getting pregnant and moving after 8-9 years of building. I left it all. I managed to get everyone taken care of and booked. I started commuting from Key West to Orlando. It was a 6-9 hour drive with an infant. Going back to work and serving 40-70 people in 2.5 weeks. Then, starting clientele in the Keys, working 1-2 days a week, while being a mom. Now, opening a bigger suite during this time, even though I’m not in Orlando all the time. I sit back and am so proud of the work I put in to make this life possible. It makes me a better mom, friend, stylist and person. Reach for the stars.
BLP: What is your favorite piece of advice you’ve been given by a fellow industry/hair pro?
LG: Always continue to learn.
BLP: What is a hair tip/technique you’ve learned that’s helped you be more efficient/successful behind the chair?
LG: While coloring the hairline, block placement to keep sections clean. Apply a bib around the hairline, and apply other color. Love this trick!
BLP: What is your favorite hair trend currently?
LG: I love a soft highlight and lowlight look. The blend creates a softer grow out.
BLP: Who or what inspires your work?
LG: My son. Before having him, I always dreamed of becoming a mom. I want him to know that anything is achievable, and you can create a life you want. Everything around us gives us inspiration.
BLP: What changes would you like to see in the industry to better help hair pros grow and thrive?
LG: Being a partner of someone in the military, it’s a bit daunting changing licenses by state. As someone who loves to travel, I think creating U.S.-wide licensing for cosmetologists/barbers would be incredible.
BLP: What is a career goal you have for yourself?
LG: Since the start of my career, I have wanted to be on stage. I will forever stand behind that. I love to teach my peers. I also love to learn from others. Your continuing education is so important.
