Nostalgic for some ’80s crimps? This season the kinks of yore grow up.
Erase any visions of that ’80s frizzed-out crimped ’do you thought would look primo in your high school yearbook photo. (You know who you are!) The kinks of today are so not Debbie Harry or Siouxsie Sioux. Instead, they’re modernized for the 2007 babe.
At Alberta Ferretti, crimps fall at random points on the length of the hair, lending soft texture. Michael Kors’ ballerina girls sport heavy kinking swept back into a smart dancer’s bun. Ditching the crimping iron in favor of hand-wrapping tendrils tightly around hair pins, the Rusk team at Grey Ant unleashes a band of kinky chicks whose crimps appear like tightly wound switchbacks. At Vera Wang and Aigner, the same technique unleashes a burst of unbridled crimps; for Vera’s angels, the style is puffed to perfection; Aigner’s gals are sober up top and party-hardy on the bottom.
Tami Jensen, a stylist for Privé, says, “Sometimes straight hair has only one look, whereas crimping allows you to do a messy and un-dressy updo, or you can crimp some sections of the hair and leave some pieces straight. It’s much more exciting!”
