Here, Bill and Samantha Brookshire welcome us to Tangled Mane Hair Studio in Clinton Township, MI, established in September 2022.
Q&A with Salon Owners:
Beauty Launchpad (BLP): What is the backstory of your salon? What motivated you to start your business?
Samantha Brookshire (SB): Before we became husband and wife and co-owners of Tangled Mane Hair Studio, we started as two teenagers growing up together. Since day one of beauty school, we’ve been side by side for over 20 years of working behind the chair. Throughout the years, we have talked and dreamed of us owning a salon one day. After raising our boys and having more time to focus on that dream, we took both our strengths in business and love for the industry, turning our dream into a reality.

SB: The aesthetic is modern elegance and earthy vibes. It is designed to reflect our unique style and personality, offering a clean, stylish look with a warm and comfortable feel. From the moment you walk in, a welcoming atmosphere will surround you that enhances your salon experience.
BLP: What services do you provide your clients? Are any of these services signature and/or exclusive to your salon?
SB: At Tangled Mane Hair Studio, we have all your hair needs covered! From trendy to traditional, short to long, curly to straight, we offer a wide range of hair cut styles to suit all ages and preferences. From touch-ups, highlights, balayage, dimensional color, vibrant vivids and more, we offer a wide variety of coloring services. We can further enhance our clients’ looks with our hair extensions, perms and smoothing treatments. We have styling covered with weekly blowouts and special occasion styles. We also offer scalp and luxurious conditioning treatments. A unique service we offer is detangling! Many clients have told us they have a hard time finding salons to help service their hair that is extremely matted. It brings us such joy to help clients save their hair after they have been turned away from other salons.
BLP: What products are used/retailed in your salon? Do you have a personal favorite?
SB: Our color line is mostly Redken, with some Pulp Riot and Matrix. The retail we offer is a mix of Redken, Matrix, Biolage and Sexy Hair.
BLP: What makes your salon unique and stand out?
SB: What makes our salon stand out, besides the gorgeous hair created, is our value in exceptional customer service. Our staff provides personalized attention and a warm atmosphere. The salon's personnel excel in attentiveness, with a sincere interest in our clients' beauty objectives, personal preferences and experience in the salon, as well as educating our clients on hair care and styling for outside the salon.
BLP: What piece of advice would you give to a new salon owner?

SB: Our goal is for every client to leave our salon feeling confident and refreshed, looking and feeling their absolute best. We strive to make each visit feel like a mini getaway—a chance to set aside life’s worries, enjoy exceptional care, and look forward to returning for the next indulgent experience.
BLP: What piece of advice would you give to a new salon owner?
SB: The best piece of advice we can give new salon owners is remember why you opened your own salon. It’s hard work, but it’s worth it.
BLP: What changes do you want to see in the industry to help salon owners and hairstylists working in salons grow and thrive?
SB: The changes we believe would have the greatest impact on helping salon owners and hairstylists grow and thrive start with education but extend far beyond it. There needs to be a clear and honest conversation about the hard work, dedication, ongoing education and perseverance required to succeed in this field. While the early stages of a career in the industry can be challenging, those who commit to the journey will find it both fulfilling and deeply rewarding.
BLP: What’s next for your salon? Do you have any goals for 2025?
SB: In just two years of business, we’re only beginning to grow. This year, our goals include increasing awareness of Tangled Mane Hair Studio so more people know who we are, prioritizing continued education, expanding our team and enhancing the benefits we offer—such as introducing healthcare for our salon staff.
