Beauty Launchpad (BLP): How did you get started in the salon industry?
J Ladner (JL): The hair industry chose me for sure! I remember visiting PMTS Tampa a couple times leading up to me starting in 2009-2010. I was always hesitant because I was working as a bartender/server at the time. I met my now husband Vince, and he sparked that reality that I could do this! I just needed that little push. Also, I was a blogger at the time, which was truly the thing to do. It was all about hair, accessories and fashion. It was the perfect progression and kick start to my career I have now. It changed my life for the better.
BLP: What is your inspiration process like?
JL: My inspiration changes over time, but it all stems from being aware of my surroundings and the people I get to interact with. I find it in the smallest details around me, when I’m out for walks, traveling around the world and through pop culture.
BLP: Tell us about your journey in the industry. What led you here?
JL: I had the most amazing mentors show me the wide landscape of this industry. From the start of my journey in the hair industry, I always said YES to any and all opportunities. In hair school, I started doing editorial session work, which then lead me to NYC where I wrote as a fashion editor and session work stylists all while starting at my first salon.
From there, I let the journey take me into salon management and lead stylist, to then opening a salon. My salon ownership lasted for eight years. During that time, I was an educator, turned social media influencer. I now am a full time educator and stylist in Los Angeles. I am proud to represent Oligo Professionnel as their chief brand ambassador and the director of education for FASTFOILS. I also am honored to be a mentor in the industry for the next generation of hairstylists! I love educating, and it's truly my passion and purpose right now.
BLP: What do you consider your specialty and why?
JL: I am a colorist, but it’s very specific to the work of efficiency. I know what it’s like to be overbooked, overworked and in steady autopilot! My mission is to allow stylists the freedom of a more seamless process and experience behind the chair. I spark efficiency within their hands that allow them to gain confidence and more profit opportunities through the art of hair color.
BLP: What advice would you give stylists just entering the industry?
JL: Say YES. Remain curious, and ask for the opportunity. I was able to gain credibility by asking for a chance to shadow, support and be in the room. Any and all rooms you want to be in are YOURS. A closed mouth never gets fed, and no one knows who you are unless you tell them!
BLP: If you could go back in your journey and do anything over again, would you?
JL: I wouldn’t change a thing to be honest. It lead me to where I am now, and it’s been challenging and rewarding. I loved my progression over my 15 years in this industry.
BLP: Where do you see the salon industry headed?
JL: I think for salon systems, it’s all about a hybrid approach for owners, allowing your stylists the growth they are needing and wanting. For education, the same approach: a hybrid of brand- and influencer-led education, and independent educators collaborating more than ever. It’s a fun and exciting time to tap into to community driven experiences.
BLP: What are your best tips for success in the salon industry?
JL: Remain curious. Ask better questions, and lead with a servant's heart! We have a special and unique opportunity to lead with love. We truly change the world.
BLP: What are some cut and colors that you see trending in 2024?
JL:Golden hair is the front runner, and its reflective hues are so luxe. I do see silver and cool hair has started to make its comeback, which is exciting. Also, vivid hair! Yes please, more please!
