Dry-cutting is the cutting method of choice for many stylists, not only because it gives a more precise cut, but because it is an easy, practical, no fuss way to cut hair. Of course, shear selection is paramount when it comes to dry-cutting technique, so we went straight to the top for advice. Beauty Launchpad sat down with dry-cutting pioneer Mike Karg (@mikekargofficial) to learn how the brand championed this category, why the right education is vital and what to look for in dry-cutting shears.
Beauty Launchpad (BLP): When and why did you decide to create your own line of shears?
Mike Karg (MK): I’d been perfecting my easy, precision-based approach to cutting hair, but I couldn’t find any shears on the market that were created specifically to cut hair dry. So, in 1999, I decided to make my own and spent the next two years using my prototype while I toured the country teaching dry cutting. In 2001, I introduced the first DRY.CUT shear and the KARG.DRY.CUT System. Since that time, the line has grown to include 26 shears.
BLP: What makes the KARG Haircutting System unique?
MK: It’s tailored for stylists who want to make money behind the chair by delivering beautiful, wearable hairstyles that look good on anyone. My system is easy to understand because it works on all hair textures. I’ve created all these tools. All you have to do is use a different tool to get a different outcome. The technique remains the same.
BLP: Why is education important for today’s stylists?
MK: Dry cutting is a must for all passionate haircutters. If you want to be recognized in this business, you have to master the art of cutting hair dry. The KARG.DRY.CUT System helps you build a reputation for excellence. It’s that simple. My easy-to-learn, contemporary techniques will make a big difference in your haircuts. You’ll not only learn how to execute the kind of effortless, real-life hairstyles fashionable people want, but you’ll learn them from a pioneer in the art of dry haircutting. Specialization is key to the future for all beauty professionals. To that end, I offer in-salon education at any level. No need to hop on a plane. I’ll come to you.
BLP: Why are KARG dry-cutting shears better for cutting hair dry than anything else on the market?
MK: We have special blade technology on some of our shears. We have seamless blending scissors that push the hair versus cutting it so it doesn’t leave lines of demarcation in the hair. We have hybrid blade design that delivers what we call a soft cut with no harsh lines. We also have texturizing scissors with fast-action blades that cut 70 to 80 percent off. Use them when you need to cut off quite a bit of hair.
BLP: What can you tell me about yourself?
MK: I was born in New York City, but I grew up in Zurich, Switzerland. In the early 1990s, I moved to the United States to further my career and quickly began working with celebrities like Sharon Stone and Marisa Tomei. In 1996, I was named “Rising Star” by a professional trade magazine and became bi-coastal, splitting my time between salons in New York and Los Angeles. Everything I do is motivated by my deep commitment to education, hair fashion and industry trends, and I still work behind the chair in New York City, Washington D.C., Memphis, Los Angeles, Newburyport, Massachusetts and Switzerland.
