Every year, we honor 30 young colorists under 30 to find out what makes them so talented and successful. Get to know 2017 honoree Jessica Garza in our interview with her:

Tell me a little bit about yourself:
I started cosmetology school at the age of 15 and graduated at 17. With my license, I've been able to work behind the chair for about 9 years. I have the pleasure of sharing my knowledge as an educator for L'Oréal Professionnel. My intention is to inspire other hairdressers, so that together we can elevate our industry. In the last year, I have also joined the Ted Gibson Artistic Team. We have worked on stage for some of the biggest shows in our industry such as Premiere Orlando, ISSE and IBS.
What inspired you to become a colorist?
I have always been creative and artistic. I loved hair early on in my childhood. Hair color is where artistry and hair meet for me.
What are your goals?
My ultimate goal is to own a salon where I can lead a team of talented and inspired hairdressers. I am currently in college working toward a finance degree to achieve this goal.
Any accomplishments so far in your career that you’re particularly proud of?
Thanks to the Ted Gibson Artistic Team, I had the honor of working backstage the Sports Illustrated Swim Week, when they launched for all sized. This made me feel empowered as a woman. It was great to do hair for beautiful, confident models of all sizes. I've also had the chance to participate in New York Fashion Week for designers such as Carmen Marc Valvo and Berta Bridal.
What are your hair color specialties?
I love a challenges and making people feel beautiful, so one of my specialties is color correction. I also love tailoring highlighting techniques such as balayage to my guests.
What do you love most about being a colorist?
In all honesty, I love making people feel happy, beautiful and confident. I can achieve that with color. Color allows me to enhance the best physical features in my guests.
Who would you consider to be your mentors/role models, and why?
I consider Ted Gibson and Jason Backe mentors in my career. They have a great deal of experience along with a fresh view of our industry. They have given me opportunities I only dreamed of and truly believe in me as an artist. The inspiration they share with everyone is admirable.
Please share a hair color, prep or color care tip:
I pair all my color services with SmartBond to preserve to integrity of the hair. I believe that using professional level haircare products help to maintain the color service.
What is your favorite color trend/technique of the moment?
Fashion colors are keeping me inspired behind the chair. I love to create these fun colors for my guests in a way that they appear elegant and expensive. I use L'Oréal Professionnel for all of my color creations.
