Here, Tessa Scissorhands (@tessascissorhands) welcomes us to Technicolor Salon in Scottsdale, AZ, established in August 2022. 

Q&A with Salon Owner: 

Beauty Launchpad (BLP): What is the backstory of your salon? What motivated you to start your business?

Tessa Scissorhands (TS): I’ve always dreamed of creating a salon that not only celebrates creativity but also provides a space for inclusivity and comfort. Living with Lupus and AuDHD, I understand the importance of an environment where both clients and stylists feel at ease and supported. Technicolor Salon is a reflection of that dream—a safe space where beauty meets individuality and transformation goes beyond hair. I wanted clients to feel like they were coming home, just as much as I do every day.

TS: Our aesthetic combines warmth, personality and sensory-friendly design. Inspired by inclusivity, the space features natural lighting, calming decor and comforting touches like weighted blankets and designated quiet zones. As we grow, I’m excited to expand these elements and create an even more enriching environment for our clients and team.

BLP: What services do you provide your clients? Are any of these services signature and/or exclusive to your salon?

TS: We specialize in transformative services, including bold color makeovers and custom extension installations. Our signature seasonal offerings, like our Halloween-inspired transformations, let clients explore their creative sides while enjoying a truly unique salon experience.

BLP: What products are used/retailed in your salon? Do you have a personal favorite?

TS: We carefully select high-quality products, such as Olaplex, Malibu C, Leaf + Flower and Danger Jones, to ensure optimal hair and scalp health. My personal favorite is the Redken ABC Five Minute Liquid Mask—it’s an instant game-changer for clients.

BLP: What makes your salon unique and stand out?

TS: Technicolor Salon is a haven for inclusivity and sensory-friendly care. We offer silent appointments, low fragrance options and a tranquil atmosphere designed to accommodate everyone, including those with sensory needs or chronic conditions. Our commitment to personalized care, paired with our love for transformative artistry, makes us a standout space in the industry.

BLP: What takeaway do you hope clients have after a visit at your salon?

TS: I hope every client leaves feeling celebrated, seen and rejuvenated. Beyond gorgeous hair, we want clients to experience a deeper sense of connection and confidence, knowing that their needs were heard and their individuality was honored.

TS: Stay true to your vision. It’s easy to be influenced by trends or expectations, but your unique perspective is your greatest asset. Build a space that aligns with your values and puts client care and team well-being at the forefront.

BLP: What changes do you want to see in the industry to help salon owners and hairstylists working in salons grow and thrive?

TS: I’d love to see more emphasis on inclusivity and mental health awareness. Flexible work environments, sensory-friendly options and better education around diversity and client care would make a world of difference in fostering a healthier, more supportive industry.

BLP: What’s next for your salon? Do you have any goals for 2025?

TS: As we look to 2025, we’re focusing on expanding our Technicolor Education platform to empower more stylists with practical and creative tools. We’re also introducing solution-based services for hair loss and exploring new ways to meet the changing needs of our industry. Our ultimate goal is to continue blending innovation, artistry and inclusivity in everything we do.
