New Innovation
In 2024, there are now numerous methods available to address various hair concerns. These include options like keratin bonds, sew-in variants such as hidden bead and no stitching required, as well as braided sew-ins. Additionally, hybrid methods have emerged, combining different techniques like keratin bonds with tape-ins or sew-in extensions. These innovations have significantly impacted the hair industry, offering a wide range of solutions for different needs. In 2024, I foresee the focus will be on seamless and comfortable methods. We have witnessed a significant decline in inflexible and uncomfortable techniques like tape-ins or I-tips. Clients no longer wish to tolerate the discomfort associated with certain extension methods.
Keratin Bonds
One of my personal favorite methods of extensions are keratin bonds.
Keratin bonds involve bonding the extensions to natural hair using heat. The extension hair is melted or fused to natural hair, creating a long-lasting bond. Keratin extensions can be styled and parted in the same way as natural hair. They can also be customized to the client’s natural density, resulting in a seamless application. It not only offers a more permanent solution for adding length and volume for up to 6 months, but it is also the most flexible and versatile method, as it offers 360 degree movement and requires little to no maintenance. Keratin bonds are perfect for clients who are constantly traveling or have a busy lifestyle, as they are the lowest maintenance method and do not require you to be in the chair every 6-8 weeks for move-ups.
TIP: One of my favorite things to do with keratin bonds is cut the keratin bond into an arrow shape (also known as “A tip”). This will create a sleeker bond that enhances client comfort and minimizes visibility.
Textures and Lengths
By 2024, I anticipate a notable advancement in diverse hair textures and curl patterns. From the gentle waves of 2A to the rich coils of 4C, this exciting shift encompasses a wide range of lengths and styles.
We are now in an era where clients are not limited to 24" as the longest hair length. We have observed an increasing demand for longer lengths such as 26", 28" and even 30". As a result, more brands are stepping up and providing custom-made lengths to cater to the unique requirements of their consumer.
Creativity With Shades
Currently, we are seeing a greater variety of extension shades than we did just 2-3 years ago. It's not limited to solid or piano shades anymore. We are witnessing the emergence of more options such as balayage, rooted, salt and pepper, high contrast and fashion color shades. This expansion in diversity allows for more creative and expressive choices in hair extensions.
Hair extensions are awesome because they let you play around with a bunch of different hair colors. You can go for natural shades that blend seamlessly with your own hair or rock bold, vibrant fashion hues that make a statement. The best part is these extensions are non-committal, so you can change your look whenever you feel like it. They're super easy to remove too, so you can switch between colors and styles without using any chemicals on your hair. It's a fantastic way to add some color and express your unique style and personality. So go ahead and embrace the versatility and creativity that hair extensions bring to your beauty routine.
Achieving A Smooth Blend
I firmly believe that achieving the most natural looking results requires not only skill with the application but also impeccable blending. The application itself must be flawless, complemented by seamless blending techniques.
For achieving a smooth blend, my go-to combination is a feathered styling razor and texturizing shears. To ensure a seamless result, I begin by cutting the hair when it's in a straight and smooth style. Then, for a second round of blending, I work on it after it has been curled or waved. This technique guarantees a flawless transition.
TIP: I wash all of my hair extensions pre-application. Most manufacturers add a silicone coating to the hair to make it silky and smooth. Washing the hair pre-application gets rid of the silicone coating, and the hair will expand up to 30% from when it first comes out of the package.
Consultation
For anyone considering hair extensions, an in-person consultation is crucial. It allows the stylist and client to color match, discuss desired goals, determine the required amount of hair, explore methods that suit the client's lifestyle and review different lengths. Virtual consultations are not recommended, as they may lead to ordering incorrect shades, lengths or quantities of hair.
I love keeping a sample of each length we offer, around 25 grams of each length. This way, we can visually demonstrate to our clients how each length will look on them. Height plays a significant role in determining the ideal length, as 24" won't appear the same on someone who is 5'4" compared to someone who is 6'2". By having a variety of lengths in stock, we empower our clients to make the best choice based on how each length complements their appearance.
Something For Everyone
Hair extensions have undergone significant advancements in recent years, and the upcoming trend for 2024 and beyond will focus on convenience, low maintenance and versatility. Sew-in wefts, keratin bonds and hybrid methods are just a few of the trendy techniques that will gain popularity this year. Whether your clients desire a temporary or more permanent solution, there is a hair extension method to suit every lifestyle and preference.
