When posed with donning multitudes of voluminous layers, what hairstyle will be proportion-friendly and not too overpowering? This was the challenge faced by Redken key stylist Guido Palau at designer Marc Jacobs’ fall runway shows, Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs. Palau’s answer to the challenge: raw texture.

At the senior Marc Jacobs line, layer upon layer of flannels and neutral-hued knits chicly swallowed the models’ lithe bodies, but without appearing dowdy—a style reminiscent of the Seattle grunge look popular with Kurt Cobain-loving groupies over a decade ago. Palau constructed hair that clinched this alternative feel by creating a style that incorporates rough-and-tumble texture with a natural edge.

Palau believes this raw, disheveled look is one of the strongest trends of the season—and a sharp contrast from last season’s dainty, structured hair. He says, “Spring featured uptight, pulled-back looks. Fall’s hair is left down and natural, with rough texture similar to what I created for Marc Jacobs.”

Over at Jacobs’ more affordable line, Marc by Marc Jacobs, the fashion designer played up proportions to the pulsating beat of the ‘90s rave club culture scene, as seen in the ultra-wide-leg trousers and bib overalls he sent down the catwalk. Instead of opting for over-the-top hair vis-à-vis ‘90s club kids, Palau kept the style easy, free flowing and extremely natural—a nice complement to the sweeping lines of the clothes’ silhouettes.

While these hairstyles appear as though the model raked her fingers through her hair, Palau is quick to add that such hairdos do take some mastering. “These new fall looks may seem simple, but in order to pull them off, consumers will need to be adventurous and experiment with their hairs’ natural texture,” he notes. “It will be imperative to start with a good cut, great color and intentional part placement.”

At Marc Jacobs, Palau applied Redken Thicken Lotion 06 Body Builder to damp hair. The hair was scrunch-dried on the shaft and ends, and lifted at the root to maximize volume. Next, Palau teased the hair and put it into a ponytail. He then released the hair, allowing it to create its own texture.

The Marc by Marc Jacobs hairstyle was done by applying Redken Extreme Anti-Snap to damp hair and allowing it to air dry.
