It was nothing short of a miracle when hand-held dryers were first introduced in the 1920s—sure, they only produced 100 watts of power (as compared to today’s 2,000+ watts) and weighed more than two pounds, but they definitely were better than the previous option of simply attaching a hose to the exhaust end of a vacuum cleaner!

Since the 1960s, when the dryer as we know it today came into existence, dryers have been slightly refined to produce more heat and power, and include conditioning properties such as tourmaline or ceramic. Nevertheless, the dryer hasn’t truly changed much in 50 years.

Until today.

Introducing the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. After four years of intensive research and development, James Dyson unveiled Dyson’s first hair dryer in Tokyo. The Dyson Supersonic hair dryer is engineered for balance in the hand, uses a fast-yet-focused airflow and intelligently controls temperature to help protect hair from extreme heat damage. It also curbs noise—a plus for when you’re trying to hear your client!

Dyson created a laboratory dedicated to investigating the science of hair, where engineers studied hair from root to tip, understanding how it reacts to stresses, how to keep it healthy and how to style it. For more than four years they tested the product on different hair types and built test rigs that mechanically simulate hair-drying techniques, which can differ around the world.

Celebrity Stylist Jen Atkin has been tapped as the official US Ambassador for the dryer.

“If you know anything about me,” says Atkin, “you know I’m a lover of innovation and new technology, and the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer is just that. The motor is much smaller, but still very powerful, so I can dry hair quickly and it feels light in my hand. Plus the aesthetic is so gorgeous.”
