Those pins that you’re tucking into her twist? You may want to take them out of hiding. Rather than using bobby and hair pins as purely functional tools, stylists like Orlando Pita and Eugene Souleiman are shining a spotlight on these Plain Jane grips. Working with Wella Professionals, Souleiman craftily inserts 100 hair pins into each sleek and swooping style at Donna Karan, allowing the bend to peek out just so. Pita brandishes pins at two shows to very different effect: At Christian Dior, he pins girls from ear to ear, using 200 spray-painted bobby pins—per girl!—to fashion ’20s-inspired, swirling bobs. For Carolina Herrera, the look is more sophisticated, less structural; Pita dresses buns with small groupings of copper bobby pins amidst a flourish of bronze flower pins (plucked last-minute from a few of Herrera’s shoes and handbags in the collection).
