Lupita Nyong'o's Natural Beauty at the Critic's Choice Awards

At the recent Critics' Choice Awards, celebrity hair stylist Ted Gibson gave Lupita Nyong'o an easy, gorgeous hairstyle. Because the 12 Years a Slave star has closely cropped locks, Gibson wanted to up the shine factor and give some shape to Nyong'o's hair. Says Gibson, "I love working with her because she loves beauty. It's so much fun to work with actresses who love the experience of getting ready for a red carpet event."

"For Lupita’s hair, I started off using 2 shine lotions mixed with a sting hold wax. After applying that to her hair I pressed hot towels to her head to calm fly-aways and give shine. Textured hair absorbs light so it's very important to give this type of hair shine and moisturizing products. Next, using a fiber filling agent, I exaggerated her widow’s peak by filling in her hairline. I waited for that to dry, then applied hairspray to hold in place."
