Hairstyles How To: The Secret to Red Carpet-Worthy Curls

Recently, Madonna was seen sporting tight, wavy curls at the premiere of her film, "Filth and Wisdom" in New York. Since then, other celebrities like Lindsay Lohan and Carmen Electra have been spotted wearing similar looks. Sam Villa, founding partner of the Sam Villa brand and education artistic director for Redken 5th Avenue gives his tips for achieving this new, trending hairstyle.

“Whether clients are looking to create soft waves, curls or intense volume, braids are the fastest way to pump up the volume,” explains Villa. He offers the following simple technique for killer curls.

Villa’s technique entails braiding hair the night before. The important thing to remember is to advise clients that the size and amount of braids determine the type of texture, the bigger the section, the looser the curl.

For Fast, Beautiful Curls:

Spray Redken Guts 10 volume spray foam into hands and use fingers to rake through the top layer of dry hair and then the under section to evenly distribute the foam which locks in texture.

For Waves: Divide hair into 4 quadrants, braid each and secure with elastics (loosely to prevent a mark).  For a more romantic smooth wave, use ponytails - wrap into buns and secure with pins.

For Curl: Divide hair into 12 sections, braid each, fold braid onto itself and pin.

For Intense Volume: Decide on a side or middle part and then cornrow entire head in medium size cornrows.  At the end of the hairline, start regular braiding, wrap braid back onto itself and pin.

Go to sleep – to prevent frizz, wear a scarf Lucille Ball style.

In the morning, take out braids and finger through texture to separate, do not use a brush unless you want to deconstruct the texture and make it explode.
