Hairstyles How To: Shay Mitchell's Pretty Little Hair Color

Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell just had a major hair color change! The show may make dramatic waves and turns with its story lines around deep dark secrets, but Shay’s taking advantage now that the show’s off filming by keeping it light. Highlights that is! As a resident of sunny Southern California, Joico Celebrity Colorist George Papanikolas is often inspired by the beach lifestyle when creating his fabulous hair color designs. This season, the balmy shores of Hawaii have captured his fancy, and he has dubbed his new highlighting technique for brunettes “Hawaiian Goddess Highlights” – recently providing the look for gorgeous Shay.

“Hawaiian Goddess Highlights” is a two-step process, George reveals. Step one is to place hand-painted, balayage highlights around the face, just in the root area. Lift these highlights to a honey shade and remove. Then select a few chunky pieces throughout the head, backcomb the top and midlengths, and apply lightener to the ends. Comb the ends first to help diffuse the color.

There are two advantages to this technique according to George. First, this color placement is flattering to brunettes because the root area remains dark.  Second, retouches can be scheduled three or four months apart, which is kind to clients’ budgets!

Joico’s VeroLight Lightening Powder + 40-Volume Veroxide is George’s go-to formula for creating balayage and chunky highlights on brunette clients—it lifts hair evenly, safely and thoroughly, and VeroLight leaves strands in excellent condition. And for additional hair health insurance, George always sends color clients home with Joico K-PAK RevitaLuxe Bio-Advanced Restorative Treatment to protect, nourish and repair color-treated hair.  “RevitaLuxe is a must,” he declares, “for any client who decides to go lighter.”
