Pony Up

This spring and summer ponytails will pop up everywhere – from braided to curled to pomped out, clients will be asking for tutorials. Sam Villa, 2012 Stylist Choice Award Winner, Founding Partner of the Sam Villa brand and Education Artistic Director for Redken 5th Avenue offers tips on creating a Pomp Pony and French Ponytail to share with clients.

Tips

* Ponytails work best with pliable hair – hair that has not been recently washed

* For recently washed hair, apply a product like Redken fashion work 15 to create tact

* Elastics work well, bungees work better

* Grips are needed for some styles

Pomp Pony - volume created with a pompadour makes this look perfect for dressier occasions.

·Isolate a triangle section of hair from eye to eye to the top of the head, set aside.
·Gather the rest of hair in both hands and move the hair from hand to hand to organize and control placement of ponytail at the back of the head (lower than the center).
·Secure with a bungee – fasten a hook on one side, wrap the bungee and secure the other hook at the top of the ponytail (if secured at the bottom it will fall out).
·Take the first triangle section and divide into three sections, spray with Redken fashion work 12 and curl with a curling iron (wrapping hair down).
·Brush section underneath and back. Then, push entire triangle section forward and cross grip it above the bungee.  Then wrap the remaining hair around the bungee and tuck in.
·Finish with Redken fashion work 12.

French Ponytail - three connected ponytails, great for layered hair.

·Take a horseshoe section (eye to eye, over the top and crown area of the head) of hair, gather together as you bring it back and secure with a bungee high on the back of the crown area.
·Take another horseshow section of hair from ear to ear and pull to center back, gather the ends of the first ponytail and secure all together in a bungee.
·Gather the rest of the hair in the nape area, pull it back, gather the ends of the second ponytail and secure all three ponytails together with a bungee.
·Finish with Redken fashion work 12.
