Frothy, puffy and a tad bit formal—it’s not hard to imagine designer Kati Stern’s Venexiana spring collection hanging from the lithe bodies of prom-bound Gossip Girl types circa 1989. What you wouldn’t see at this mythical affair: The quirky-cool coif that Sahag Workshop’s Karmela Lozina and Jutta Weiss dreamt up to top off these throwback designs. Featuring a labyrinth of wisp-addled braids, this style speaks more to the easy-breezy looks favored by today’s bohemian beauties than the feathered chicks of yesteryear.
Working in tandem with Linea Pro, Lozina and Weiss aim for alluring dichotomy: The style is neither too grown-up nor too girlish; not too finished, yet not too distressed. “First we want to remove any fuzz, and give the hair extra shine and even texture,” explains Lozina as she passes Linea Pro’s Titanium Flat Iron through a model’s hair. Adding extensions that contrast with each model’s natural haircolor, Lozina and Weiss weave plaits that they then interlace into a labyrinthine chignon at the nape of the neck. Though the stylists coaxed shine and a fuzz-free finish only moments before, Lozina explains that to keep the style “breezier, we’re pulling out small strands around the hairline and chignon, twisting them, and then pressing them with a Linea Pro Mini Iron to create a bent, faux-frizz effect.” Smooth with frizzy details: The dichotomy of their idiosyncratic styles mirror the mystery of a teen to a T.
