Summer is here, and there's nothing better than spending a day in the sun with your toes in the sand. The best part about coming back from such an excursion? Sunkissed skin and hair! The most recent trends have been all about glowing, shiny hair, as well as low-maintenance styles. @glittery_hippieThis hair color technique embraces both for a just-returned from a week in the sun look. Called the Scandi hairline, this technique lightens the hair immediately around the face, including shorter baby hairs, to create a softened and lighter and brighter look. There's plenty of opportunities for experimentation with this trend, whether opting for a subtle or dramatic effect or rocking this technique with different hair colors. How-To:
Hairstylists Melanie Hasson (@melaniemhasson) and Taylor Perrone (@maneandtayl) collaborated on this gorgeous Scandi blonde with a layered cut, with Hasson creating the cut and Perrone creating the color. @melaniemhasson and @maneandtayl
"Scandinavian hairlines have been the trend of the season," shares Perrone. "With everyone wanting to go blonde for spring and summer, this technique is the perfect way to add an extra pop of brightness to blondies hair."
Consultation: Always consult with your client before a Scandinavian Hairline. Not everyone is a good candidate for this type of color. This technique works best on clients with a natural base of 7 or higher.
Lightener: I recommend using L'Oreal Professional Blond Me Studio 9 with a 20-volume developer. Add Epres Bond Builder to keep the hair intact and healthy.
Foiling: When foiling the hairline, take small sections packed closely together to ensure even lift and brightness. This is essential for a Scandinavian hairline. The foils should be tightly packed around the hairline to create the desired brightness.
Lifting: Lift the hair to a level 9 or higher, aiming for the color of the inside of a banana peel. Once achieved, remove the foils and prepare for the next steps.
Rinse and Prep: Rinse the hair, shampoo, towel dry and brush out the hairline. Apply the Scandinavian hairline technique on damp hair. @ash.blondes
Client Positioning: Have the client lay back in the sink, propping their head up with a towel.
Applying Lightener: Use either diluted leftover lightener or mix a new batch with 10 volume. Since you're working on fine baby hairs, be gentle but effective.
Baby Hairs: Use a fine-tooth comb to pull forward the baby hairs around the forehead. Apply lightener to these hairs, following the hairline.
Connecting Sections: Paint the sections right behind the baby hairs to ensure even brightness and color connection.
Heat Activation: The heat from the forehead will lighten the baby hairs, so no extra foils are needed at this point.
Processing Time: Let the lightener sit for 5-10 minutes, monitoring closely to ensure the baby hairs lift past the yellow phase. Avoid leaving a yellow ring around the face.
Rinse and Tone: Once lifted to the perfect color, rinse the hair. Toning is optional but recommended. If you tone, be careful with the hairline sections to avoid ruining the effect.
Styling: After styling, pull back the client's hair to show them how the brightness of a Scandinavian hairline can transform their look.
“I truly feel Scandinavian hairlines elevate a blonde," Perrone adds. "It completely changes the look of their color and makes their hair stand out. If you’re looking for something that says 'my hair looks expensive,' add this service to your menu. The clients will keep asking for more.”
