Q&A with Melissa
Beauty Launchpad (BLP): What is a fun fact about you?
Melissa Reynolds (MR): I’m a crazy cat lady with six cats.
BLP: How did you get your start in the industry?
MR: My husband encouraged me to go. I've always wanted to be in the beauty industry. He told me to just sign for beauty school, and I am so glad I did!
BLP: What is your current favorite hair trend?
MR: That’s a tough one! The trends are always changing, and I love them all, but my current obsession is buzz cuts with fun vivid patterns painted everywhere.
BLP: What is a tip you have for your fellow beauty pros who are looking to grow their following on socials?
MR: I don’t have the biggest following myself, but share more of you and not just your work. People want to get to know you more. They want to know your likes and dislikes. Just show them you!
BLP: What advice would you give to the younger version of yourself just starting out in the industry, looking back on your whole career?
MR: Don’t let anyone discourage you! Just keep going!
BLP: What is a tip/technique you’ve learned that’s helped you be more efficient/successful in your services or business?
MR: Taking classes and getting certifications that actually improved my skills behind the chair. People LOVE seeing how much effort you put into your career. It’s the first thing they tell people when referring you.
BLP: Who is someone you consider a mentor/role model in the industry?
MR: Bethany Vannoy aka (@hairrockerbet) on socials. I’m not saying this because she’s one of my dear friends. She’s just truly an inspiration to so many, a great educator and an amazing friend!
BLP: What is a practice/ritual you have to care for your mental health and set boundaries between your work and personal life?
MR: I really enjoy taking time to myself to unwind and clear my head, whether it be in my home, outside in nature or taking a long car ride listening to music.
BLP: What do you think needs to change in the industry to help beauty pros continue to grow and thrive?
MR: More community, less competition. We are all doing what we love! Let’s learn from each other and be one big happy family.
