Q&A

Beauty Launchpad (BLP): What is a fun fact about you?

Rachel Sage Bell (RB): I’ve done hundreds of blonding transformations, taught sold-out masterclasses and worked with the biggest brands in our industry, but somehow doing my own best friend’s hair still makes me SO nervous!

BLP: How did you get your start in the industry?

RB: I went to beauty school thinking I’d focus on makeup and skincare – hair wasn’t even on my radar. I had never touched another person’s hair, but the moment I got hands-on with color, something just clicked. The precision of foil work, the way everything had to be so intentional and intricate – it just came naturally to me. I picked it up quickly, and before I knew it, I was hooked. The first few years after graduating were tumultuous, but when I opened my own space, everything changed. It was the turning point I needed to truly find my place in this industry and take my passion to the next level.

BLP: Who is someone you consider a mentor/role model in the industry?

RB: Although I’ve never had a personal mentor, I’m deeply inspired by the wonderful people in our industry who uplift and support other artists, without the shadow of competition. As big as this industry is, it’s really easy to feel alone or like you don't have a seat at the “cool” table. I admire all the incredible artists who decide to just build their own table instead, where EVERYONE deserves a seat.

BLP: What is your proudest achievement in the industry thus far?

RB: My proudest achievement is opening my own salon at 22, with the help of my beloved husband. Building my space from the ground up connected me with my community in a way I never expected, and it’s become something so much bigger than just a business. On the other side of my career, my education work is just as meaningful to me – getting to teach and help other stylists who’ve struggled like I did has been incredibly rewarding.

BLP: What is your favorite piece of advice you’ve been given by a fellow industry/hair pro?

RB: One of my favorite quotes comes from the late legend Vidal Sassoon: "The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary." It’s a reminder that talent alone isn’t enough – you have to put in the effort, keep learning and stay committed. Hard work is what sets you apart and turns passion into something real.

BLP: What is a hair tip/technique you’ve learned that’s helped you be more efficient/successful behind the chair?

RB: The biggest game-changer for me has been elevating the client experience to feel truly luxurious and personalized. A thorough consultation sets the foundation, but it’s the small details – thoughtful communication, attention to comfort and a seamless experience – that make clients feel valued. It’s not just

BLP: What is your favorite hair trend currently?

RB: I’m really into warm blonde tones right now. There’s something so natural and beautiful about the rich, golden hues – like they’re kissed by the sun. It gives hair such a soft, inviting warmth, while still looking fresh and polished.

BLP: Who or what inspires your work?

RB: What truly inspires my work is the opportunity to enhance a client's natural features and tones. I’m passionate about creating looks that highlight their individual beauty, bringing out the best in their natural hair color and texture. It’s about making them feel confident and radiant by embracing what’s already unique to them.

BLP: What changes would you like to see in the industry to better help hair pros grow and thrive?

RB: I’d love to see more emphasis on community and collaboration, rather than competition. The industry has so much potential for growth when we support each other, share knowledge and lift one another up. It would also be great to see big industry brands working more with smaller creators and prioritizing relationships with everyday stylists – those who are the backbone of the industry and keep these brands thriving. Building connections with all stylists, regardless of their social media status, helps create a more inclusive and sustainable industry for everyone.

BLP: What is a career goal you have for yourself?

RB: I want to continue growing my business, educating other stylists and refining my craft. I’ve been fortunate to have my work recognized, but my goal is to keep pushing boundaries, elevating my artistry and making an even bigger impact on the industry.
