We are spotlighting the winners of Beauty Launchpad's 30 Under 30 contest, sponsored by Denman Professional.
Here, you'll get to know Josie Otero (@josiepicosita), a 29-year-old hairstylist based out of The Beauty Shop in Cincinnati, OH and Studio Sage in Jacksonville Beach, FL.
Q&A:
Beauty Launchpad (BLP): What is a fun fact about you?
Josie Otero (JO): I’m a twin, born four hours apart. Yes, I’m the oldest! Although we share a similar voice and face, we are unique and different in our own ways — and I truly love being a twin!
BLP: How did you get your start in the industry?
JO: Growing up in a house of girls and a twin, comparison was constant. Insecurity lingered until I found my voice through cosmetics, fashion and styling. As a teen, doing friends’ hair and makeup and seeing their confidence grow showed me this industry is where I belong. I’ve now been a part of the industry for eight years.
BLP: Who is someone you consider a mentor/role model in the industry?
JO: I’ve had the privilege to be inspired by so many talented individuals in both Jacksonville, FL and Cincinnati, OH, but if I had to name one, it would be my sweet friend Luz Brando (@LuzCosmeticTattooing). We’ve been through so much together, and she exemplifies dedication — proving that perseverance leads to incredible opportunities and possibilities.
BLP: What is your proudest achievement in the industry thus far?
JO: My proudest career achievements are a tie: working on the Brocade collection with Chrystofer Benson, Erica Keelen and Studio Sage Team, which was published in a magazine and featured on tickets and backstage passes to Premiere Orlando's main stage show, and moving to a new city, building a clientele from scratch without knowing anyone. Both have been incredible milestones I never imagined possible.
BLP: What is your favorite piece of advice you’ve been given by a fellow industry/hair pro?
JO: Just GO for it! It’s easy to get caught up in comparison and competition, but don’t let that hold you back. Film that video, post it, take that class — invest in yourself! There’s a clientele for everyone, and the right people will find you for exactly who you are!
BLP: What is a hair tip/technique you’ve learned that’s helped you be more efficient/successful behind the chair?
JO: Recently, I’ve picked up several tips that have made my work more efficient. I especially love the coil trick I picked up for my textured clients for the perfect face-framing pieces. Thank you TikTok!
BLP: What is your favorite hair trend currently?
JO: I’ll always be obsessed with curtain bangs and a classic, timeless blowout!
BLP: Who or what inspires your work?
JO: My work is inspired by fashion, music and the atmosphere around me. I draw creativity from others, my surroundings and even my clients — their individuality and confidence fuel my passion.
BLP: What changes would you like to see in the industry to better help hair pros grow and thrive?
JO: I’d love to see more inclusivity in hair extensions, especially for wavy, curly and textured hair. With so many people needing diverse options, including those facing hair changes from medical changes, access and variety should evolve to meet everyone’s needs.
BLP: What is a career goal you have for yourself?
JO: My goal is to keep growing as a hairstylist behind the chair. Ultimately, I’d love to work with a hair company that I can grow with while creating content and educating — even bilingually.
