DermOne and TONI&GUY Academy Team Up for Skin Cancer Awareness

A fantastic haircut has the power to turn your day around. Now, that same cut might also save your life. DermOne Dermatology Centers has teamed up with the Dallas Fort Worth TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy in Plano and Keller on an educational initiative to help the community recognize potential skin cancer sooner. With the tens of thousands of heads and necks that TONI&GUY stylists lay hands on each year, these stylists stand in one of the best positions to help positively change lives.

On June 8, skin experts from DermOne Dermatology Centers presented a special training session at the Plano TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy to kick off this new partnership. TONI&GUY stylists, educators and directors from across DFW attended this educational session, which covered the "ABCDEs" of skin cancer and what to look for on a client's scalp, head and neck. DermOne believes everyone deserves healthy skin and with TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy, a leading provider of hairdressing education, the two companies hope to help curb the growth of skin cancer in today's population.

"We continuously seek opportunities to integrate ongoing education for our students outside of our hairstyling course work," said Kent Movchan, TONI&GUY VP Company Owned Academies. "Working with DermOne to offer skin screening education is just the kind of added awareness we hope will enhance our students and stylists’ knowledge for their clients."

The fact is that one person dies from melanoma every 57 minutes. Getting regular skin checks and catching cancerous spots sooner gives people a better chance for survival. Melanoma on the head and neck accounts for 10 percent of all skin cancer deaths, and with many spots lying beneath hair or on the back of the head or neck, it's many times the eagle eye of a stylist who can find the potentially dangerous spot even before a client finds it for himself or herself. More than one in five people will develop skin cancer in their lifetime - and everyone needs a good haircut.

In addition to talking about skin cancer, Dr. Carolyn Kim, a board-certified dermatologist with DermOne Dermatology Centers who conducted the training, also discussed other skin-related topics, such as psoriasis and eczema, conditions that can be very debilitating and have a great impact on a person's daily life. By learning more about these conditions, stylists can help their clients get the expertise they need to get treatment and have the healthiest skin possible.  Education on these conditions and more is another way that TONI&GUY and DermOne are coming together, combining their expertise to help people look and feel their very best.

"I often have patients who come to me to ask about a spot that their stylist made them aware of," said Dr. Carolyn Kim, a board-certified dermatologist with DermOne Dermatology Centers, "so it's important that stylists are trained in what to look for so that they can alert their clients to get it checked out."

After a successful launch at the TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy in Plano, a second session was held at the TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy in Keller. More sessions are being planned for the future.
