Today, you will get to know Marie Negron (@glamhairbymarie). She is a salon owner and stylist at Flawless Beauty Salon in Tampa, FL.
Q&A:
Beauty Launchpad (BLP): What is a fun fact about you?
Marie Negron (MN): I never took a driving test in order to obtain my driver’s license. Back then, I didn't know a lick of English, and all I had was this learners permit I got from Puerto Rico. Since it was in Spanish, everyone mistook it for a legit driver’s license. I just took the written test, which I passed because I memorized all the questions and answers a few days before.
BLP: How did you get your start in the industry?
MN: My start in the industry is an interesting story. I never planned on becoming a hairstylist, but I guess life had other plans for me. I became a young mom at 17, and when I turned 20, I moved from Puerto Rico to the United States with my family. After working various jobs for almost 10 years, my sister-in-law suggested we go to beauty school. We couldn't quit our jobs, so we enrolled in a part time program. It was tough, and there were moments when I wanted to quit, but I knew this was my chance to have a career for myself. It took me nearly two years to complete the program, but looking back, I'm so glad I didn't quit. I discovered a true passion for this amazing industry.
BLP: What is your proudest accomplishment?
MN: My proudest accomplishment is the establishment of my very own salon, where I have been able to provide a nurturing environment for aspiring stylists to flourish and develop their careers. It brings me immense joy to be able to mentor and support these young professionals as they embark on their journey towards success.
BLP: What is your current favorite hairstyle trend?
MN: I’m currently loving the AirTouch technique created by Vladimir Sarbeshev. It allows me to create seamless blends and beautiful dimensional blondes.
BLP: What is a tip you have for your fellow stylists who are looking to grow their following on socials?
MN: Engage with your audience. Building a strong social media presence goes beyond just posting content. Take the time to engage with your audience by responding to comments, messages and mentions. In addition to that it's crucial to be consistent with your content. Make sure to post regularly and at a time when your audience is most active.
BLP: What is a piece of advice about styling/working with hair that you have for your fellow stylists?
MN: My advice is to prioritize communication with your clients. Always listen carefully to their needs and preferences, and make sure you understand their desired style before you start working on their hair. This will ensure that they leave your salon feeling happy with the results. In addition, never stop learning and growing. Attend workshops, seminars and conferences to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques in the industry. Investing in your education is investing in your clients' satisfaction. By continuously improving your skills and knowledge, you will be able to provide your clients with the best possible service.
BLP: What do you love about your work?
MN: I love making people feel good about themselves. It's very rewarding to see the smile on someone's face when they leave the salon feeling confident and happy with their new hairstyle. I also love the opportunity to meet and connect with different people. Lastly, I like to attend workshops, seminars and independent classes to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques.
BLP: What inspires your work?
MN: I find myself inspired by other talented hairstylists and artists in the industry. I love exploring their work, following their journeys and learning from their techniques. Seeing their creativity and innovation pushes me to constantly improve and try new things in my own work.
BLP: What motivates you about the industry?
MN: My amazing clients keep me motivated. Their trust in me to transform their hair and make them feel confident is truly inspiring. Their kind words, appreciation and positive feedback fuel my passion for my career. Knowing that I've made a positive impact on someone's day, helping them feel beautiful inside and out, is what motivates me to constantly improve myself and be a better hairstylist.
BLP: What is a career goal you have for yourself?
MN: I would like to become an educator and share my knowledge with aspiring beauty professionals. I believe that education is the key, and I hope that one day I can inspire and empower other stylists to reach their full potential.
