In this exclusive podcast, Vanessa King, Director of Education at Sorella Apothecary, discusses how estheticians can use chemical peels to get the best results for their clients.

Peel season is one of King’s favorites at Sorella because it enables estheticians to get great results, respect the barrier and see the change they expect in the skin. She said that estheticians educating their clients on what outcomes can look like with a chemical peel is the first step in getting good results. She said the goal is for the client to have healthier, glowing skin.

King said that estheticians might be hesitant to give chemical peels because they might be nervous. She said in schools, estheticians are taught that chemical peels are advanced techniques, with potential risk of harm and damage. Instead of creating excitement or a challenge, it created more fear than opportunity. She said that when estheticians know the why behind a chemical peel, it changes everything and can move from fear to opportunity.

“Skincare brands, like Sorella Apothecary, are selling products, especially chemical peels that are meant to create success in the business,” she said, adding that following a protocol for a chemical peel can lead to the esthetician being confident that it is a treatment they can master.

While acids and pH’s can make chemical peels cool, flashy and exciting, King said brands forget the most important part of a chemical peel is skin outcomes. She said that brands need to remember what peels do; the goal of a peel; and how to customize the peel for the customer. The goal is to give customers a treatment that will give them long-term results.

“A peel isn’t just a product, it’s a part of a complete treatment, and so, I think instead of isolating them to work on their own and kind of categorize peels as peels, really talking more about the results that peel can lead to,” she said,

King said that Sorella Apothecary names their peels. There is the Clear Skin Peel, Healthy Aging Peel, Brightening Peel and Maintenance Peel. Having names for the peels shows the target audience for the peel and how it will point to that specific concern. She said what set Sorella apart is the experience the customer will have in the treatment room and that will lead to repeat customers and loyalty.

King said that most peels will all do the same thing, create a controlled wound on the skin that will enable the cells and energy go to that place and come back stronger and more resilient than it was before. She cautioned that you can’t use straight acids on the skin because that will compromise the skin barrier. Acids need to be balanced out with great barrier supportive ingredients.

“With every formula that Sorella has, we’re going to always combat something really intense with something intensely healing,” she said.

With the Healthy Aging Peel, there is a 15% trichloroacetic acid (TCA), which is on the intense side. To balance that out, there are also copper peptides in the formulation. King said that it is important to protect the skin’s barrier when doing something corrective. King said that a peel system should support the esthetician, not overwhelm them. Clear protocols that reduce the guesswork and limitations on how many layers can be placed on the skin help the estheticians get the kind of results that they are looking for and make peels more approachable. King said that when peels are approachable estheticians feel more confident.
