Calneurin-Sense Targets Microbiota–Skin–Mind Axis for Sensory and Skin Benefits

Rahn's Calneurin-Sense (INCI: water, Cichorium intybus (chicory) root extract, pentylene glycol, citric acid) is a new cosmetic active ingredient developed to act on the interconnected relationship between the skin, microbiota and sensory perception, with a focus on enhancing skin comfort and appearance through what its developers describe as a microbiota–skin–mind axis.

The ingredient is derived from sustainably sourced chicory root (Cichorium intybus) extract and is ClimatePartner certified, reflecting its positioning within environmentally responsible cosmetic innovation.

According to available data, Calneurin-Sense is designed to support skin balance disrupted by stress and environmental factors by activating beneficial skin microbiota activity. In vitro studies indicate that it stimulates Staphylococcus epidermidis to release factors associated with neurotransmitter signaling, while maintaining the skin’s natural antibacterial defense mechanisms. This mechanism is linked to downstream effects on neurotransmitter-related responses, including dopamine and oxytocin release as reported in associated scientific documentation.

Clinical and in vivo evaluations suggest visible and sensory skin benefits following application. Reported outcomes include improvements in skin evenness, luminosity, hydration and firmness, with firmness enhancement during movement measured at up to 17.6%. Additional findings indicate improvements in skin smoothness and perceived tactile quality, with users and others reportedly perceiving a more pleasant skin feel. Studies also associate the ingredient with reduced redness and increased hydration.

Beyond cosmetic appearance, Calneurin-Sense is positioned within the emerging field of neurodermatopsychology, with in vivo studies indicating immediate improvements in skin sensation after repeated use. The ingredient is also linked to a perceived enhancement in social comfort through tactile skin interactions, as described in its supporting research materials.

The active is supplied as an aqueous solution with a recommended usage level of 1–3%. It is designed for inclusion in skin care formulations aimed at combining sensory experience with measurable skin performance benefits.
